Trump's top advisers accuse Trudeau of back-stabbing after G7 summit

Mr. Trump addressed the subject of global trade during an impromptu news conference at the summit on Saturday, saying that he does not want to see other countries take advantage of the U.S. over trade. "We make commitments and keep them", the presidency said, adding that "France and Europe maintain their support for this (G7) statement".

SPD leader Andrea Nahles accused Trump of turning the G7 summit into a disaster with his tweets and bowing out of his worldwide responsibilities. "Maybe, but nobody is forever", he told a news conference flanked by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trudeau argued that Trump is making a strategist mistake by placing tariffs on Canadian steel.

The outburst suggested that any deal had collapsed and his threat to impose sanctions on vehicle imports will outrage his ostensible allies - especially Germany and Canada, major exporters to the U.S. market.

"Here's the thing. "He really kind of stabbed us in the back".

Having left the G7 summit in Canada early, Trump's announcement on Twitter that he was backing out of the joint communique torpedoed what appeared to be a fragile consensus on a trade dispute between Washington and its top allies.

Kudlow later tied Trudeau's comments to the president's upcoming Singapore summit with North Korean despot Kim Jong-Un and explained that if anything went wrong during the negotiations, it would likely be Trudeau's fault.

Trump insisted relationships with allies were a "10" just before he left the summit. And then Trudeau starts blasting him in a domestic news conference?

Trump planned to leave the summit on Saturday before it discussed climate change and the health of oceans, underlining fractures in the G7 exacerbated by USA trade tariffs.

At the news conference, Trudeau said it was "kind of insulting" that the US implemented tariffs on the basis of national security. "The prime minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the president".

Navarro said they express the "sentiment" of the president, before concluding his remarks on Trudeau by borrowing descriptors from Trump's tweets: "dishonest, weak". Trudeau, who threatened retaliatory tariffs, also said Canada would not be "pushed around".

After bashing Trudeau and the other attendees, President Trump's top economic advisor actually took to CNN Sunday morning, claiming Prime Minister Trudeau "stabbed" America "in the back".

Paris also delivered a withering response to the United States president's tweeted instruction for American officials to withhold their endorsement.

Mr Trump had already left the summit when Mr Trudeau announced retaliatory measures Canada would take next month in response to U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

Russian Federation was kicked out of the group in response to its 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Morneau said that Canada is prepared, should the trade war escalate.

Still, the United States and European Union will establish a dialogue on trade within the next two weeks, signaling a modest step forward for the bitterly divided allies of the G7.

European officials said Mr Trump had tried to water down the language in the draft communique on the WTO and rules-based trade.
