Trump's personal attorney splits with his own legal team

Cohen likely to cooperate with federal prosecutors

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, who is under investigation for a number of possible crimes ranging from bank fraud to campaign finance violations, is reportedly concerned that he could be arrested any day now, according to friends of Cohen who spoke to Vanity Fair and New York Daily News.

"Attorney-client privilege is dead", the president tweeted.

Cohen has maintained that he's innocent of wrongdoing, and Trump has called the raid on his lawyer an assault on attorney client privilege. Still, sources told ABC that the new developments with regard to Cohen are expected to hit the White House, family members, staffers and counsels hard.

Judge Wood subsequently appointed former federal judge Barbara Jones to act as a "special master" to conduct an impartial review of the materials and to referee any disputes between Cohen and the government. She rejected three items that Cohen, Trump or the Trump organization had designated as privileged.

Cohen has been represented since 2017 by Stephen Ryan, a Washington lawyer initially hired to prepare him for congressional testimony about alleged Russian interference in the presidential election.

As to why Cohen may feel compelled to cooperate with federal prosecutors, only Michael Cohen can say-but Ken White, a defense lawyer who makes a living off battling the government, gave us one idea. Cohen has not been criminally charged. But after that review is finished, he will seek new legal counsel, the people familiar with his case said. (Reached for comment, Cohen wrote in a text message, "Your alleged source is wrong!") The specter of Cohen flipping has Trump advisers on edge.
