Trump withdrew from G7 statement to show toughness: Kudlow

President Donald Trump on Saturday accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of making

White House aide Larry Kudlow tells CNN's "State of the Union" says Trudeau has done a "great disservice" to the G-7 by saying Canada had to stand up for itself and that the US was responsible for the problem with tariffs.

Following the G7 leaders summit, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a press conference criticizing US tariffs and said that Canada "will not be pushed around".

He added that Trudeau's statement risked making Trump look weak before his meeting with Kim Jong Un, the top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in Singapore.

Trump was last to arrive for the G7 working breakfast, walking into the room when the summit's host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, had almost finished his welcome and presentation speech, Efe reported.

"As Canadians, we are polite, we're reasonable, but also we will not be pushed around,"Trudeau said. And that comes right from Air Force One".

Mr. Trump insisted relationships with allies were a "10" just before he left the summit.

Trump has pointed to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's criticism of him as a reason for withdrawing from the consensus statement.

Trump and Trudeau exchanged barbs after a highly contentious G-7 meeting resulted in a press conference in which Trudeau promised not to be pushed around.

In a news conference after the summit, the Canadian leader had reasserted his opposition to the U.S. tariffs, and vowed to press ahead with retaliatory moves on 1 July.

The director of the National Economic Council was appearing on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday when he suggested Trudeau should "apologize in the name of the Western allies".

Mr Trump had earlier denied that the summit had been contentious, contradicting what one G7 official described as a bitter harangue between the US President and his counterparts over tariffs.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Mr Trump's announcement on Twitter had destroyed trust and Europe's answer must be to stick even closer together. "Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!"

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump". That will not stand, Navarro said. And then Trudeau starts blasting him in a domestic news conference? Trudeau says Canada will respond to those tariffs by imposing its own, which will go into effect July 1.

Tapper picked up on the implication and said this was about North Korea. "Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn't", he tweeted. "I have made it clear to the president that [imposing retaliatory tariffs] is not something we relish doing, but it's something that we absolutely will do".

"As a representative of IL, a state with one of the most important trade relationships with Canada, I have every desire to see our negotiations with Canada continue productively and beneficially, but Prime Minister Trudeau is sabotaging that cause by driving both sides into their corners instead of encouraging a more diplomatic dialogue", Krishnamoorthi said.
