Trump signs executive order stopping family separation

Trump defends 'zero-tolerance' policy towards immigration blames opposition

The effort would mark a dramatic turnaround for an administration that has been insisting, wrongly, that it has no choice but to separate families apprehended at the border because of the law and a court decision.

On Tuesday Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray Caso said the practice was "cruel and inhuman", and clearly violated human rights. Because any illegal border crossing is prosecuted, parents and children are separated during the legal process. The House is slated to vote on a pair of rival immigration bills Thursday, but neither appears to have enough support to pass, Gainer reported.

"We had a great meeting", Mr Trump called out as he left.

Two things are very clear: first, the sights and sounds of crying children and infants in cage-like border facilities are going to damage Trump and his party politically if they persist.

Pegging his Facebook post to World Refugee Day, Obama implored his former constituents to imagine themselves as immigrants "so desperate to flee persecution, violence, and suffering" that they'd attempt to bring their families into the U.S.

It also allows the Department of Homeland Security to separate children from parents if they believe the child may be in danger.

President Donald Trump indicated he would take action shortly to both improve security on the border and help keep families together, speaking briefly with reporters Wednesday. "Perhaps, I'd rather be strong, but that's a tough dilemma".

But his fellow Republicans control both chambers in Congress and his own administration implemented the current policy of strict adherence to immigration laws.

But in fact they show thousands of youngsters detained at the USA border under the Obama administration in 2014.

The plan, as described by administration officials, would keep families together in federal custody while awaiting prosecution for illegal border crossings, potentially violating a 1997 court settlement limiting the duration of child detentions. Federal law prevents children from being held in the same detention facility as those charged with unlawful entry, causing border patrol agents to separate children from their families.

"The idea that the way to end family separation is to indefinitely jail kids with their parents in family gulags at the border is as morally reprehensible as separating kids from their parents", said Frank Sharry, executive director of America's Voice, an immigration advocacy group".

Currently, the Flores Agreement states that minors can only be detained for up to 20 days.

The policy had led to a spike in family separations in recent weeks, with more than 2,300 minors separated from their families at the border from May 5 through June 9, according to Homeland Security.

The president has also dispatched Attorney General Jeff Sessions to the Capitol to urge Republicans to support the immigration proposals, and DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is scheduled to huddle with Republicans to answer questions and rally support for the bills.

The votes are expected Thursday afternoon, according to House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

He added that: "We want to solve this immigration problem". The House of Representatives was to vote on Thursday on two bills created to halt the practice of separating families and to address other immigration issues.
