Trump considers pardoning boxer Muhammad Ali, lawyer says "unnecessary"

President Trump floats pardoning boxing great Muhammad Ali

Speaking to reporters outside the White House as he prepared to leave for the Group of Seven Summit in Quebec, Trump said he was thinking about pardoning someone who was "not very popular".

Ali's legal fight ended in 1971, however, when the Supreme Court reversed the conviction 8-0, so a presidential pardon might be superfluous.

President Trump may pardon late boxing champion Muhammad Ali.

This led to Ali's arrest and conviction, later overturned on appeal by the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr Trump also recently said he has the "absolute right" to pardon himself in the Russian Federation inquiry, although he insists he has done nothing wrong.

Trump told reporters Friday that Ali is on a list of 3,000 people he is considering for pardons because, in his words, they "really have been treated unfairly". "I'm thinking about Muhammad Ali", according to a pool report of the president's remarks.

"The pardons are a very positive things for a president", Trump said.

Trump even invited the National Football League players who took a knee during the national anthem to protest police mistreatment of black people to offer recommendations for pardons for those who have been treated unfairly.

Ali regained the boxing title in 1974. "I thought Kim Kardashian was great because she brought Alice to my attention. better than any celebrity I could pardon". He then granted a posthumous pardon to the boxer on the advice of actor Sylvester Stallone. Ali was stripped of his heavyweight crown in 1967.

The president says he is considering as many as 3,000 pardons, according to Fox News, adding that the pardoning power is "a lovely thing".

However, it is unclear why Mr Trump would be considering a posthumous pardon for the boxing legend since his conviction has already been overturned.

President Trump has made use of the power on six occasions during his 17 months in office.

The president was recently praised for commuting the sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old great-grandmother who was serving life in prison on drug-trafficking charges. Ali died in 2016.

"I think the pardon should go to those who kneel, that's who should get the pardons, that would be putting it in the right perspective, in the right place", she explained. "They've seen a lot of abuse and they've seen a lot of unfairness", he said.
