Trump considering two women for Supreme Court

BSIP Newscom

"You only need to add two".

The president told reporters aboard Air Force One that he would announce his pick to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on July 9.

In announcing Kennedy's retirement this week, Trump said he would start the effort to replace him "immediately" and would pick from a list of 25 names that he updated previous year.

"Sounds like they're ready to fight no matter who the nominee", McConnell said, referring to Democrats concerned about the ramifications of a second Trump SCOTUS pick.

Trump was asked Friday if he plans to ask potential nominees their views on abortion rights and Roe v. Wade.

Murkowski already had one suggestion for the administration: Consider people who may not be on the shortlist crafted during Trump's presidential campaign with heavy input from the Federalist Society. That list includes six women. He said that he would be interviewing possible nominees over the weekend. Also of interest are Amul Thapar, a federal appeals court judge from Kentucky who is close to McConnell; Brett Kavanaugh, a former clerk for Kennedy who serves on the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., and Amy Coney Barrett, who serves on the federal appeals court in Chicago.

"In my mind there's no difference between stealing a swing seat on the Supreme Court the way they did and adding justices to the court to reverse that majority", Faris said.

Collins said she has the "utmost respect" for Kennedy's service and integrity during his time on the nation's highest court and labeled him "an ideal justice".

"I think the only thing that's going to influence those two very good senators is. how they perform in the hearing", said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, R-Iowa.

Trump could be reluctant to take Lee out of the Senate because of past experience. "If I were John or Jerry or Bill, I'd say, 'Wait a minute".

Trump has moved quickly on his selection process.

In the run-up to selecting Gorsuch, Trump met with three contenders and White House officials vetted several more.

Trump's nominee must win confirmation by the Senate.

The Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative political campaign organization, launched a seven-figure ad buy Wednesday, aimed at vulnerable Democrats, said chief counsel and policy director Carrie Severino. "What we're seeing here is Gorsuch 2.0".

Earlier in the day, Trump's senior counselor Kellyanne Conway told reporters he could announce his nominee before he departs for summits with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies and then Vladimir Putin.

"It is exciting though, right?" said Trump.

Instead he thinks its more likely that court packing could be used as an opening bid for Democrats in order to pursue more moderate institutional reforms to the Supreme Court.
