British Prime Minister Theresa May offered some support for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the fallout from the Group of Seven leaders meeting in Quebec, but she stopped short of condemning critical comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump's trade adviser.

He called Mr Trudeau "dishonest & weak" after Mr Trudeau said at a news conference that Canada would retaliate for new U.S. tariffs.

Peter Navarro says his job was to send a "signal of strength" after Trudeau's post-G7 news conference sent the US president into a fit of pique that threw the summit into disarray. Trump said he was surprised to watch Trudeau's press conference aboard Air Force One as he flew to Singapore. "The reality is that the President felt that they'd had a productive meeting... but I think that there was offense taken that once airborne on your way to an incredibly important worldwide summit that the prime minister of Canada chose to take to the podium to condemn the actions of the United States". And I say, 'Push him around?

Trump said he was retaliating against Canada with countervailing tariffs, saying of Trudeau: "He learned that's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada".

"We finished the (G7) meeting and really everybody was happy".

Trump has consistently railed against what he claims are unfair trade practices by some of America's biggest trade partners, including Canada.

MacLauchlan also took the opportunity to affirm his support for the supply management system in Canada's dairy industry, which has been heavily attacked by members of the Trump administration.

"I think it's a very fair question", he said.

"I want to pay a particular tribute to Prime Minister Trudeau for his leadership and skilful chairing, which enabled us after two days of negotiation between leaders to agree actions and a shared approach on some of the most pressing challenges facing the global community and our citizens", she told parliament. "And it won't even be tough". He had other things, bigger things, on his plate in Singapore.

Similarly, former interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose, also a member of the NAFTA advisory group, said Trudeau is doing the right thing. U.S. President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held the historic meeting between leaders of both countries on Tuesday morning in Singapore, carrying hopes to end decades of hostility and the threat of North Korea's nuclear programme.

The Americans' criticism of Trudeau left a former Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper, stumped.

"Sometimes when we think about tariffs, when we think about a trade war, we lose sight of the real impact, and that's on workers", Singh told a news conference on Parliament Hill.

In reality, the United States has a small surplus with Canada when goods and services are considered - $341.2 billion to Canada's $325.9 billion, according to 2016 statistics from the US trade representative. The Trudeau government has announced it will impose dollar-for-dollar, retaliatory tariffs on metals and a range of other US products by July 1.
