Thomas Markle breaks silence over royal wedding in first TV interview

Meghan and Harry

Thomas Markle revealed during an appearance on Good Morning Britain on Monday, June 18, that he and his son-in-law discussed Trump during a phone call prior to Harry and Meghan's May 19 wedding.

"I absolutely wanted to walk my daughter down the aisle", Thomas Markle told ITV's "Good Morning Britain".

Markle had been due to take part in the ceremony, and said that he had even started working on his speech but he eventually stayed away, saying he needed heart surgery. "Meghan cried, I'm sure".

"I send my love to both of them".

He said he was still recovering from the operation but added: "I'm doing much better". "He said, 'Give Donald Trump a chance'".

"This was a presentation to me to change my image, because for the a year ago photographs of me were always, like, derogatory", Thomas explained. "This was a presentation to me to change my image". Obviously, that all went to hell.

It was a lovely moment to watch and it was very clear that Prince Charles and Meghan got on very well as they smiled and chatted quietly for a brief moment.

'They take all kinds of pictures of me that [were] making me look negative.

"She was so lovely walking down that aisle and so proud and so gorgeous", Thomas said of Meghan, who was escorted down the aisle by Prince Charles.

He continued: "At that point, she said "it's Harry" and I said 'oh, Harry okay!'"

"Watching it was hard for me because I wasn't there, but at the same time, I'm watching my daughter being watched by the entire world and I couldn't have been more proud", he said.

"He's great, an interesting guy, a prince, but my daughter's been a princess since the day she was born", he said.

Thomas said Meghan was smart and Harry was a "good pick".

He broke the news to his daughter in an emotional phone call just days before the wedding.

When he told the young couple that he could not attend the wedding, Markle said Harry and Meghan were sad but supportive: "They both said, "Take care of yourself, we are really anxious about you".

Markle went on to give details of how his 36-year-old daughter had told him she had a boyfriend, and that he was British, before admitting it was Prince Harry. Very nice man. Gentleman.

The 36-year-old attended the nuptials of Harry's cousin Celia McCorquodale looking every inch the flawless wedding guest (in her £4,000 frock), and showed she had fully embraced the upper class tradition of never going to a wedding bare-headed. "I feel bad about it", he said.

"They were disappointed. Meghan cried, I'm sure - she did cry - and they both said, 'Take care of yourself, we are really anxious about you.' They said the important thing is that I get better".

Mr Markle also said he discussed politics, including the United States president and Brexit, with Prince Harry. "We talked a few times about Donald Trump and Brexit and things like that".

"He said give Donald Trump a chance".

Prince Harry's comments on Trump may be surprising to some as it has been well reported that he enjoys a friendship with Trump's political foe Barack Obama. That was his politics.

"That was his politics, I had my politics", he explained. "I sort of disagreed with that". There was no real commitment for it.

"I can't think of a better replacement than someone like Prince Charles", he told the program.

But news about Prince Harry expressing certain political views follows controversy from two years ago when Queen Elizabeth was being accused of backing Brexit in the European Union referendum.
