The United States, Mexico And Canada Will Host The 2026 World Cup

The U.S. men's national team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation, but American soccer just received a massive boost: On the eve of the sport's biggest spectacle, FIFA members voted to award the 2026 World Cup jointly to the United States, Mexico and Canada. The U.S. proposed to host 60 out of the 80 matches, leaving Canada and Mexico with 10 fixtures each.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first tournament played in the expanded 48-team format, up from the current 32 countries.

The United States held the World Cup in 1994 while Mexico held it in 1986.

The US metro areas in the running are Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium), Baltimore (M&T Bank Stadium), Boston (Gillette Stadium), Cincinnati (Paul Brown Stadium), Dallas (AT&T Stadium), Denver (Sports Authority Field), Houston (NRG Stadium), Kansas City (Arrowhead Stadium), Los Angeles (Rose Bowl and the new National Football League stadium), Miami (Hard Rock Stadium), Nashville (Nissan Stadium), New York (MetLife Stadium), Orlando (Camping World Stadium), Philadelphia (Lincoln Financial Field), San Jose (Levi's Stadium), Seattle (Century Link Field) and Washington (FedEx Field).

The USA already possesses the sufficient requirements of world-class stadia and global airports to host the tournament and can boast that when they hosted the World Cup in 1994 they set a record for crowds. Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup but held the women's tournament in 2015.

"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the Fifa World Cup in 2026", said Carlos Cordeiro, president of the US Soccer Federation.

The United States was defeated in the final round of voting to determine the 2022 World Cup host.

The so-called united bid convincingly beat another put forward by Morocco, receiving 135 of 206 votes against 65 for the North African country. "If we do that, we have to do a good job of making sure that folks locally can go to those games, the practices, the qualifiers - all of it".

Morocco has made five unsuccessful bids to host the World Cup.

But which cities and stadiums will host games at the tournament is still being determined. To counter concerns about severe travel, the bid said teams would be placed in regional clusters.

While Morocco, as expected, obtained strong support in Africa, the United bid's power base in Central and South America, plus some welcome backing from parts of Europe and Asia, made the difference.

According to Yahoo, the bid called for each of the three host nations to play in the opening matches.

The Moroccans were seeking to bring the World Cup to northern Africa for the first time. Host nations have always been granted automatic berths into the tournament, including in the lone previous World Cup that was co-hosted by multiple countries (2002; Japan and South Korea).

Of those 23, only six are from outside the USA: Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey in Mexico, and Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton in Canada. The country hosted in 1970, but it also hosted in 1986 after it was originally awarded to Colombia, who couldn't host for economic reasons. Another three are cities that will have expansion teams coming into MLS.

Fifa, in consultation with the local organising committee, will make the final venue decisions.
