Strawberry Moon 2018: Will June’s full moon affect your sleep?

GETTYStages of a blood moon

A lunar eclipse is the opposite of a solar eclipse where the Earth's shadow is cast on the Moon.

The January 31 sighting of a "blue Moon" and a total lunar eclipse occurred in India for the first time after 1982.

The reddish glow that appears on the moon during the eclipse, due to the way the Earth's atmosphere scatters light, gives it the name "blood moon".

The Book of Revelations also contains a similar passage which reads: 'And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great quake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood'.

The eclipse won't be visible to viewers in North America, except via webcasts. The moon will be partially eclipsed for roughly an hour before and after the main event. July's Blood Moon will last almost one hour and 43 minutes, and is being touted as the longest of this century.

In July 2018, the full moon and lunar apogee fall on the exact same date of July 27. This eclipse will be 40 minutes longer than the previous super blue "blood moon" in January 2018.

It continues: 'The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the awful day of the Lord come'. Europe and Africa will witness the eclipse during the evening hours, sometime between sunset and midnight on July 27, according to the reports.

Madagascar and the Middle East will have the best view of the eclipse around midnight. McClure estimates that the total lunar eclipse will include partial eclipses that start at 6:24 UTC, or 2:24 p.m. EST, to 10:29 UTC, or 6:29 p.m. EST.

This lunar eclipse will be visible to people located in the eastern hemisphere, so Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia will get to witness the blood moon.

What Is A Blood Moon?

It will take nearly four hours for it to cross the Earth's dark umbral shadow.

Why Is This Particular Lunar Eclipse So Long?

This is because the full moon happens to coincide next month with the point at which the moon's orbit is furthest away from the earth, so it will take longer to pass through the earth's shadow.
