Spain World Cup 'keeper De Gea wants public apology from prime minister

David de Gea

Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea, has demanded a public apology from Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez over his comments in the wake of an unfounded sex abuse scandal.

Socialist leader Sanchez, who took over as prime minister earlier this month after conservative Mariano Rajoy lost a vote of confidence, criticised De Gea two years ago amid sexual assault claims against the Manchester United player.

The newly appointed Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, visited the national team squad recently to wish them luck before they began they set off to Russian Federation for this summer's World Cup. "My future? The important thing is the World Cup and not to think of anything else that can divert you or upset you", De Gea told reporters at Spain's Media Day ahead the World Cup. "Football is football and anything can happen but as always, I am calm".

"We have to be focused".

"It is also true that most public figures who disrespected me have not even apologised in private".

I'm a quiet, peaceful guy and I'm not usually affected by things - personally, I wasn't too affected by it but I have family, people who are close to me and it's not right that they should be affected.

Spain's campaign opens against Portugal, winners of Euro 2016, how do you feel about starting against one of the most attacking sides in the finals?

When pressed further about the transfer rumours, De Gea added: "Football is football and a thousand things can happen".

"It is water under the bridge and it came out that it was all a lie". It's very easy to talk about other people behind their back in this country. De Gea said he is ready to counter star Real marksman Cristiano Ronaldo.

Many recognise the former Atletico man as the world's best goalkeeper and so there's no surprise that Madrid are reported to be interested in signing him once more. "I just want to be 100 percent focused on the World Cup".

We know that it's always important to get off to a good start at the World Cup, and particularly this time because we are up against a tough and hard team.
