Small explosions, seismic activity continues from Hawaii's Kilauea

More Small Blasts from Hawaii Volcano

Nearly daily, steam explosions at the summit of Kilauea are creating sizable earthquakes, the latest of which happened early Tuesday.

Lava fountains from a fissure in the volcano reached as high as 55m from Saturday night into Sunday, pushing flows of molten rock into the ocean, it said.

The USGS warns against trying to explore the risky ocean entry points because the potentially explosive meeting of lava and water can send debris flying.

Lava from various fissures - and lately from fissure 8 exclusively - has consumed homes in Leilani Estates, the neighboring Lanipuna Gardens and farther east at the Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland subdivisions in Kapoho, where the once-picturesque Kapoho Bay, prized for its tidepools, was filled in. A 5.3-magnitude natural disaster accompanied the latest eruption.

The volcanic gas and ash emission could affect air quality across the central and southern half of Big Island, Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said.

The Hawaii eruption, with high walls of slow-moving lava, has engulfed about 600 homes since May 3, Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim said last week.

"Additionally, the interaction of lava with the ocean creates "laze", a corrosive seawater plume laden with hydrochloric acid and fine volcanic particles that can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs". Residents have been warned to avoid the area.

Another ongoing hazard comes from lava meeting the ocean.

Those figures underscore the incredible volume of lava that continues to shoot from fissure no. 8 in Leilani Estates, ground zero for the eruptions that started 40 days ago. "FEMA doesn't have a magic wand to make it not happen".

As well as the hundreds of homes lost, Kilauea has destroyed countless other buildings, forced thousands to flee their homes, and engulfed massive expanses of land.
