Robert De Niro drops F-bomb against Trump at the Tony Awards

Laurie Metcalf pulls off upset win at the Tony Awards. Did 'Roseanne' controversy help

De Niro was much more candid at the Tony Awards on Sunday night, earning a standing ovation for expletives aimed at the USA president.

Robert De Niro stole the show for the audience at the Tony Awards in NY on Sunday night, when he used his time onstage to once again register his disapproval of US President Donald Trump in the bluntest way possible.

That initial victor was Andrew Garfield, taking home the award for best actor in a play as Prior Walter in the revival of "Angels in America", Tony Kushner's groundbreaking epic of gay rights in Reagan-era America. Director David Cromer related that musical's themes to the mental health crisis evidenced by recent high-profile suicides, urging those overwhelmed by loneliness and disconnection to reach out for help. He won his third, for best featured actor in a play. We are all sacred. Garfield said during his acceptance speech, referencing the Supreme Court's decision to side with a Colorado baker who refused to make a cake for a same-sex couple.

In a mesmerising moment, Melody Herzfeld, the heroic drama teacher who nurtured numerous young people demanding change following the February school shooting in Parkland, Florida, was honoured from the Tony Award stage.

Gutfeld joked that an "elderly, confused man went missing in New York" and was later given dress clothes and a stage at Radio City. Here is what people had to say.

Kushner isn't shy about his politics, having written not just the unabashedly political "Angels in America" but also the Oscar nominated screenplays for the films "Munich" (2005) and "Lincoln" (2012).

Springsteen then took the stage to perform a soulful rendition of "My Hometown".

When hosts Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban came back onstage, they were dressed in each other's characters in the musicals they were in - with her in a beard and him in a short waitress outfit.

Check those out below, along with the other musical performances from the 72nd annual Tony Awards.

"Did you know neither one of us has ever won anything?" they asked the audience before plunging into an opening number "for the people who lose".
