Republicans Have Mixed Feelings About Today's Immigration Meeting - Cortney O'Brien

House Republicans grapple with immigration debate, don't reach deal in 2-hour huddle

"Now it's a matter of putting on paper and seeing if we actually have an agreement".

Parts of the two-page outline were sketched out to reporters Friday by Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.), who filed the discharge petition, and confirmed by aides familiar with the talks. Otherwise, the next possible date for a vote is July 23, as the House is not scheduled to be in session July 9. Thanks to the pressure of the discharge petition, Republican leadership has gotten the message that this is an important issue.

Denham said the moderates' threat to force House votes on immigration - which GOP leaders have fought - remains in effect.

"They also seem to think President Trump might be able to get a good deal, even though no one has a clue as to what that deal might entail".

Republicans in the U.S. Congress on Thursday struggled to agree on immigration legislation that could be voted on before November's congressional elections, as party members disagreed on key issues such as the future of illegal "Dreamer" immigrants.

It was uncertain if the proposal represented a breakthrough in the long-running GOP divide between moderates and conservatives on immigration, or would devolve into the latest failed attempt to bridge that gap.

A push by House Republicans for immigration legislation stems from Trump's decision to end an Obama-era program protecting from deportation hundreds of thousands of young immigrants who were brought into the United States illegally when they were children, commonly known as "Dreamers".

Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., said Wednesday that a large group of conservatives he leads has discussed providing a pathway to citizenship to "Dreamers" in exchange for funding for the proposed border wall, ending the visa lottery and limiting the relatives immigrants can bring into the country. "There have been very productive, real conversations on real issues but there's no deal", he said. "We have the signatures, we have the people ready to go down and sign, and we've been working with leadership to give them enough time to put a bill together and to bring this in front of our conference".

While some explanations touch on campaign strategy, the dynamics of the race and low voter turnout, the best theory about what happened to the once-expected Democrat vs. Democrat contest might be that Villaraigosa just isn't as popular with fellow Latinos and other L.A. residents as he (and many pundits) believed.

The groups said they made progress toward a resolution for the young immigrants who have been living in the US illegally since childhood, with a plan to protect them from deportation and provide them a bridge to legal status and eventual citizenship.

"I've been around here for three and a half years, I can tell when something is either trending the right direction, the wrong direction or it's just pretend", Walker said.

"Things that become law and stay law are bipartisan", Barton said.

Pete Peterson, a Republican who ran for California secretary of state in 2014 and who is now the dean of Pepperdine University's School of Public Policy, said he hopes the party thinks a bit bigger than the gas tax.

Barton said the discussion didn't delve into detail on how to define the Dreamer population that would be covered under the bill.

Trump announced he would end the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allowed almost 700,000 young immigrants to obtain permits to work and temporarily stay in the U.S. But the program largely continues temporarily, pending an unresolved legal battle. "What it comes down to is the citizenship question and how you deal with that". "Do you create a merit-based pathway that doesn't now exist or do you somehow put them in line with some of the pathways that already exists?"

Meadows heads the conservative House Freedom Caucus, which demands construction of a wall along the southwest border with Mexico and has sought new limits on legal migration. The successful recall campaign strips Democrats of their supermajority control of the state Senate, although they hope to win it back in the fall. The closed-door negotiations followed, with members genuinely expressing optimism that both sides were giving talks an honest shot.

"The negotiations have reached a critical stage", Meadows said.

"We've got the rule of law in this country, and nobody gets special consideration", said Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.

But the Senate has already proven a four-pillar probably can't pass that chamber.
