"Simply put, the House has now missed two opportunities to fix our broken immigration system and make our country more safe, secure, and prosperous", House Republican Lloyd Smucker said on Twitter.
The family separations have occurred since early May after the administration began seeking to prosecute all adults crossing the border without authorization, including those travelling with children.
Seventeen of Texas' 24 House Republicans joined every Texas Democrat in voting against the measure. There are plenty of other instances where even when Trump scored a win, it was only after much unnecessary drama that undercut his original goal, from his foiled efforts to repeal Obamacare to the family-separation crisis sparked by his "zero tolerance" immigration policy.
"By now we know that is not what we will get from Donald Trump's nominee", Sanders said.
Lawmakers are struggling to find the answers to the immigration question, especially now that a federal judge has ruled the government must reunite immigrant children separated from their families.
The main bill on the floor Wednesday would have granted a pathway to citizenship to an estimated 1.2 million illegal immigrants, according to the Migration Policy Institute. It also would have redirected $US7 billion ($9.54 billion) for border technology to build more family detention centres. Another House bill on immigration, seen as taking a more hardline stance, failed last week.
Sabraw, an appointee of former Republican President George W. Bush, sharply rebuked the administration.
The bill was killed 301-121, with almost half of Republicans opposing the measure. Still, Curbelo said, "a lot of good has come" from the past few weeks of immigration discussions.
That is a reference to an estimate by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) of how many illegal immigrants ultimately might have become citizens under the bill.

"In my mind there's no difference between stealing a swing seat on the Supreme Court the way they did and adding justices to the court to reverse that majority", Faris said.
All Democrats voted against both bills.
Vaughan said it is clear that the supporters of the Goodlatte bill represent the majority view of Republicans in the House. "He said you send me anybody - if it comes from Barack Obama there's a two letter answer and the answer's no".
"Don't let them fool you".
"What we have here is the seeds of consensus that will be gotten to, hopefully now but if not, later", he told reporters Tuesday.
But the reality is "this would've been a whole lot more helpful a week ago", the aide said. "It will never pass the Congress without some element of compromise", Coffman said. Thursday is the last day the House is in session until July 10, and then there are only three weeks before a month-long August recess when members will be back in their districts campaigning for re-election.
The compromise bill would have provided almost $25 billion in funding for Trump's border wall, limited legal and illegal immigration, provided protection from deportation and a path to citizenship for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, and reversed Trump's "zero tolerance" policy, which has resulted in migrant children being separated from the families.
