Raptors hiring Nick Nurse as head coach

Raptors pick assistant Nick Nurse as new head coach: report

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Nick Nurse will be the franchises next head coach.

Nurse is finalizing contract terms with Toronto, but met with president Masai Ujiri and general manager Bobby Webster on Tuesday morning to accept the job, sources said.

An assistant for the Raptors since 2013, Nurse, 50, was a two-time coach of the year in the British Basketball League.

A graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Nurse was 23 when he became head coach of Grand View College, making him the youngest college basketball coach in the U.S.

But the team was again bounced from the playoffs by LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Casey was let go shortly after.

Nurse coached in Europe for 11 years starting in 1996. He joined the Raptors organization in 2013 and has served as an assistant on the staff alongside Dwane Casey since then.

Casey was named head coach of the Detroit Pistons, replacing Stan Van Gundy, on Monday. So, their final two candidates were current assistant coach Nick Nurse and Spurs assistant Ettore Messina.
