Prominent Australians recognised in Queen's Birthday honours

Queen spends her 91st birthday at Newbury Racecourse

Paralympian Kurt Fearnley and author Kate Grenville are among the 1007 Australians on this year's Queen's Birthday Honours List.

The AC is one of the most prestigious of the Queen's Birthday honours - leading civic awards recognising good deeds and significant achievements in the Australian community.

He also speaks regularly around the world about improving wellbeing at work.

"Women have always achieved great things and I am pleased to see so many of them recognised this year", he said Monday.

The Remains Of The Day and Nanny McPhee star is joined on the list by fellow actor Tom Hardy, who is also recognised for services to drama, receiving a CBE, while Keira Knightley is made an OBE for services to drama and charity.

"When I joined the bench in 1989 there were enough courthouses that we could truly talk about "local" justice: Thornbury, Yate, Gloucester, Stroud, Cirencester, Tewkesbury, Wells, Frome, Bridgewater to name just some of the local ones - all now gone".

"I am delighted and extremely proud to be made a Member of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honours List", said Katharine, who is now on maternity leave following the recent birth of her second child.

Defoe added that he feels "blessed and humbled" to get the honour, described it as his biggest achievement to date.

"I like to think this award honours that, and the importance of literature and creativity in the classroom".

Forty-nine percent of the honorees are women, while 10% of all those on the list are from black and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds.
