President Trump, Kim Jong-un to Sign Agreement Pledging to Continue Talks

US President Donald Trump gestures as he meets with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un at the start of their historic US-North Korea summit at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore

Trump and Kim met privately from 9:05am local time for 48 minutes flanked only by their translators, then broke for a wider bilateral meeting with aides, a meeting expected to last 90 minutes, leading into lunch at 11:30am (3:30 GMT).

Mr Kim and Mr Trump arrived in Singapore on Sunday for what will be the first-ever summit, set to held on Tuesday (June 12), between a leader of North Korea and a sitting United States president.

Members of the USA delegation, including U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo, right, and John Bolton, national security adviser, left, and North Korean advisers watch a television screen showing the meeting.

"This is just a new beginning", said Trump while he was shaking hands with Kim.

On the eve of the first encounter between a sitting US president and a leader of North Korea, American officials are maintaining any resulting agreement must lead to an end of North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile threats.

DPRK stands for North Korea's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Moon, the son of North Korean war refugees, took office a year ago promising to seek engagement with the North only to be stymied by rising tensions amid a steady drumbeat of North Korean missile tests and saber rattling by Pyongyang and Washington.

Kim is due to leave on Tuesday afternoon, a source has said.

Other South Korean experts believe Kim's command of English to be significantly stronger, according to UPI, suggesting that he could choose to use English to help smooth communication at the outset of the tense summit with Trump.

Trump said he expects the talks to be a "tremendous success" adding, "We will have a tremendous relationship, I have no doubt".

They also patted each other on each other's arms as they walked together at the Capella Hotel on the resort island of Sentosa.

Trump will also speak with reporters in Singapore before departing for home.

The former Central Intelligence Agency chief said USA sanctions will remain in place until Washington verifies the North's denuclearization efforts.

"North Korea has previously confirmed to us its willingness to denuclearize, and we are eager to see if those words prove honest", Pompeo said. The "madman" comment also came after a historic televised statement from Kim, in which the North Korean leader called Trump a "mentally deranged USA dotard".

Trump made the unprecedented decision to meet with the leader of the rogue regime, a move all of his predecessors had avoided.

"The entire world is watching the historic summit between (North Korea) and the United States of America, and thanks to your honest efforts ... we were able to complete the preparations for the historic summit", Kim told Lee through an interpreter.

Less than a year ago, Trump was threatening "fire and fury" against Kim, who in turn scorned the American president as a "mentally deranged USA dotard". Past nuclear deals have crumbled over North Korea's reluctance to open its doors to outsiders. The White House has since said that he will play no role in the discussions. I asked him, I said I have something to say from North Korea, and he brushed me off.
