Pompeo: Trump North Korea tweet was done with 'eyes wide open'

US Secretary of State to Visit China, Talk about Trump-Kim Summit

Pompeo is scheduled to fly to Beijing to meet his Chinese counterpart after the meetings in Seoul. But simultaneously, Seoul is aiming to prepare its defenses in case the US decides to halt joint military exercises indefinitely or pull out the around 28,000 troops it has stationed inside South Korea's borders.

By claiming that the North Korean nuclear threat has disappeared, Trump also risks weakening the USA negotiating position in talks on denuclearization that were mandated by the summit and will be led from the U.S. side by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The United States did, however, commit to suspending joint military exercises with South Korea, Trump told reporters before departing the summit site.

Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said Japan saw "US-South Korean joint exercises and the US military presence in South Korea as vital to security in East Asia".

"We got a lot more done [Tuesday] than I ever thought possible", he said of the meeting with Kim.

"Chairman Kim Jong Un understands the urgency of the timing of completing this denuclearization, and understands we must do this quickly", Pompeo told reporters. After all, if there is no threat, why would the North Koreans need to give up their arsenal? What if America suffers buyer's remorse and the president (or perhaps the next president) reneges, and Kim finds that he is as vulnerable as was Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, whose fate national security adviser John Bolton has made clear he would happily assign to the North Korean leader?

After first arriving in Seoul on Wednesday, Pompeo said he expected that North Korea would take major steps toward nuclear disarmament during Trump's first term.

North Korea is believed to possess more than 50 nuclear warheads, with its atomic program spread across more than 100 sites constructed over decades to evade global inspections.

It was the first time a sitting USA president met face to face with a North Korean leader. He said he would bring back USA troops and save a lot of money.

Democratic critics in the United States said the agreement was short on detail and the Republican president had made too many concessions to Kim, whose country is under U.N. sanctions for its nuclear and weapons programs and is widely condemned for human rights abuses.

Blanket media coverage on Monday included Kim's surprise tour of the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel and its surrounding gardens, and the first hours of the meeting with Trump in the resort island of Sentosa. "These are nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles that have the capability of reaching the United States", Rubio said. Previous year it tested long-range missiles that could reach the USA mainland, although it remains unclear if it has mastered the technology to deliver a nuclear warhead that could re-enter the atmosphere and hit its target.

Trump also said in a separate tweet that North Korea is "no longer" the US' "biggest and most risky problem", telling Americans and the rest of the world they can "sleep well tonight!"

"Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea", Trump tweeted.

In February 2017, during an interview with Fox News's Bill O'Reilly, Trump said he "respects" Putin and downplayed O'Reilly's description of him as a "killer".

"The U.S. has stationed combat troops in South Korea since the end of the Korean War in the 1950s and has used them in a variety of drills". "President Obama said that North Korea was our biggest and most risky problem". -South Korean exercises appeared off-limits under the new guidance.

"The issue of South Korea-U.S. joint exercises is one that should be discussed", Kang said. He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul.
