Pompeo: No sanctions relief for North Korea until complete denuclearization

Donald Trump says North Korea no longer a nuclear threat: ‘sleep well!’

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that he expects North Korea to take steps toward major nuclear disarmament within the next two-and-a-half years. Kim signed a document committing North Korea to denuclearization, but it was light on details and reminiscent of past agreements violated by the rogue regime.

As Trump acknowledged that denuclearization would not be accomplished overnight, the North suggested Wednesday that Trump had moved away from his demand for complete denuclearization before US sanctions on the long-isolated country are removed.

"Only then will there be relief from the sanctions", he added.

In a statement North Korea agreed to work towards "complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula".

US President Donald Trump (2nd R) and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un (2nd L) sign documents as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (R) and the North Korean leader's sister Kim Yo Jong (L) look on at a signing ceremony during the US-North Korea summit at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore on June 12, 2018.

In an interview with Bret Baier of Fox News as he was leaving Singapore following the denuclearization summit with the North Korean leader, Trump declined to condemn the record of his interlocutor.

The deal Trump made with North Korea could end up fundamentally changing the state of relations between the USA and North Korea, but many critics point out that it lacks a specific outline for how Pyongyang will denuclearize. After a three-way meeting with Pompeo and Japan's top diplomat, South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha suggested the US still had some explaining to do, telling reporters that the issue of the drills "was not discussed in depth".

Pompeo also pushed back against reports coming from North Korean official state media, claiming Trump and Kim agreed to a "step-by-step" process, with many interpreting the announcement as the USA giving concessions to the regime along the way.

The tweet followed a New York Times story on the Trump administration's lack of scientific expertise, the president's questioning of the honesty of the American media at an worldwide summit in Canada and his dismissal of diplomatic expertise in favour of using a "touch and feel" approach in his talks with Kim. There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea ...

The Facts: He's wrong in suggesting his administration is the first to start on denuclearization with North Korea. But big, joint U.S.

"Let me assure you that "complete" encompasses verifiable in the minds of everyone concerned", Pompeo said. -South Korean exercises appeared off-limits under the new guidance.

Ordinary North Koreans consistently voice unequivocal support for the leadership when speaking to foreign media.

North Korea's official news agency on Wednesday quoted Kim as saying it is "urgent" that both North Korea and the United States "make a bold decision on halting irritating and hostile military actions against each other", while mentioning Trump's pledge to halt the military exercises. It's unclear whether the president informed US allies in the region of his plan to end the "war games", as he called them, prior to his declaration. I said, 'I want to stop that and I will stop that, and I think it's very provocative'. The next scheduled major exercise, involving tens of thousands of troops, normally is held in August.
