Plant that causes third-degree burns, blindness found in Virginia

An invasive plant that emits a toxic sap that, when exposed to sunlight, can cause third-degree burns and even blindness, has been found in northern Virginia, Fox News is reporting. Sap in a person's eye can damage their vision as well, possibly resulting in blindness.

The sap can cause painful blisters that can form and become "dark and pigmented", and scars that can last up to six years, according to the NYDEC.

These plants had previously been found growing in other parts of the Mid-Atlantic and New England, including in New York, Pennsylvania, and MA; and in the Pacific Northwest in OR and Washington.

The giant hogweed plant itself (Heracleum mantegazzianum) is technically a biennial or perennial herb in the carrot family.

The Virginia Tech group posted photos of the plant on Facebook, urging anyone who comes across a giant hogweed plant to report it - and be careful not to touch it.

A number of plants are often confused with giant hogweed, including cow parsnip, angelica, Queen Anne's lace, wild parsnip, and poison hemlock.

The latest confirmed sighting of giant hogweed came in Clarke County, Virginia. The VT said about 30 of the large flowering plants were found.

If you do come into contact with the plant, wash off the sap with cold water immediately and get out of the sun. A toxic reaction can begin as soon as 15 minutes after contact.

If Hollywood wanted to make a movie about a horrifying plant invasion, giant hogweeds would make a great candidate for the lead role - they are absolutely massive, incredibly toxic, and readily spread wherever their seeds take root. Call your health care provider in case of a severe reaction.

Here are handy tips to help you identify giant hogweed.

Apply sunscreen to the affected areas if you have some at your disposal.

Since the discovery, others have reported giant hogweed sightings, but Martin said the Berryville plant is the only confirmed sighting. Compresses soaked in an aluminum acetate mixture - available at pharmacies - can provide relief for skin irritations.

If you notice the plant, say authorities, don't use a lawn mower, weed whacker, or chainsaw to remove it, as those methods can cause the sap to splatter. If sap gets into your eyes, rinse them and wear sunglasses. If you must touch giant hogweed, wear disposable rubber gloves, a long-sleeved shirt and trousers.
