‘Papa! Papa!’ Audio of children stokes rage over separation

Recording of crying children at border adds to outrage

An audio recording of children being detained inside a Border Patrol facility is being widely shared online as the Trump administration's controversial zero tolerance immigration policy, which involves separating children from their parents while families are trying to enter the USA, continues to spark outrage. But advocates say it's not that simple.

They have one hour to collect as much information as they can before the hearing begins.

The plan, however, does not address the more than 2,300 children that have already been separated from their families since the "zero-tolerance" policy was implemented earlier this year that sparked outcry across the nation.

Lincoln-Goldfinch said she knew of two migrant mothers who had sobbed hysterically throughout their court appearances, because immigration authorities had told them to say goodbye to their children before heading to the courthouse.

Federal officials have set up hotlines and an email contact for parents seeking information about how to find their children.

"If we don't get that information, then there's no way of knowing that child was separated", Olivares said. "We don't have a balanced view of what's happening, but what's happening at the border is the border is being overrun by those who have no right to cross it".

"We must always arrest people coming into our Country illegally", Trump said.

A recording from a children's detention facility shows what it sounds like in practice.

Those family separations caused a worldwide uproar, however, after news outlets published countless stories about devastated and traumatized migrant children - some just months old - being placed in shelters across the United States while their parents were detained separately or deported.

One of them said Nielsen, who had become the face of the administration's policy, had little faith that Congress would act to fix the separation issue and felt compelled to act. Children can't be jailed with their parents.

One migrant mother who arrived in the United States with her husband and daughter was tricked into boarding a bus without her child.

This insight - that children's well-being at times of adversity is dependent upon the presence of safe, loving caretakers, ideally their parents - has been confirmed repeatedly in the intervening decades. "Instead of protecting traumatised children, the President has directed his Attorney General to pave the way for the long-term incarceration of families in prison-like conditions", said Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.

The recording was released by investigative United States media outlet ProPublica on Monday, and was said to have been made from inside a U.S. customs and border protection facility. The protesters said documents indicate that when Walmart sold the store, it likely knew the facility would be used to detain child immigrants. "This isn't hard", said Lee Gelernt of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Border Patrol serves as the clearinghouse for all immigrants caught crossing the border illegally under current policy.

On Tuesday, Olivares' team had seven people left to interview with five minutes left.

"What started out as a hope to help one person get reunited with their family has turned into a movement that will help countless people", the couple said in a statement released by a spokeswoman Wednesday. "She wanted to give us information because she realized what we were trying to do".
