'One time shot' for peace with North Korea: Donald Trump

Flight from Pyongyang lands in Singapore ahead of North Korean leader’s arrival

Ahead of his much-anticipated meeting with Kim, the US President sounded optimistic and said the meeting would be a "one-time shot" at peace.

Mr Trump has not approached the North Korea crisis with kid gloves and seems unlikely to adjust his tactics now.

The two leaders have a rare chance tomorrow to settle this 65-year stalemate once and for all. He describes the summit as "produced by Kim, directed by (South Korean President Moon Jae-in), and inspired by Trump".

The official media had reported that the two leaders plan to meet, but offered few specifics, including where and when.

The art of the unconventional deal?

. "I can see we are doing what we can by all means", a Singaporean told Yonhap News Agency on condition of anonymity.

As Trump's adviser and former NY mayor Rudy Giuliani told an event in Jerusalem last week hosted by OneFamily: "Now President Trump is on the verge of, hopefully, a breakthrough with North Korea".

"I'm not ready to give an authorization for the use of military force to this president or any other one until I understand that the path for peace is not attainable", he said. There was no need to.

A woman guest, challenged by the same North Korean official, said she had only taken photos of the lobby and refused to show her phone.

While this meeting with Mr Kim may be just the start of what might be a long and fraught journey, it is at least that - a start.

US defense and intelligence officials have assessed the North to be on the threshold of having the capability to strike anywhere in the continental USA with a nuclear-tipped missile - a capacity that Trump and other USA officials have said they would not tolerate. The only sane reaction is to hope that they do both get along. "So at the moment, the wisest approach for China is to just leave North Korea and the U.S. to it".

"If a breakthrough is achieved, if peace comes, there will be a bountiful harvest, primarily of course within the Korean Peninsula but indeed for all the rest of us", he said.

A "changed era" had come about, it said. He calls for improved relations and engagement with South Korea, though adds that he has a nuclear button on his desk.

Air Force One landed on Sunday evening, local time, in Singapore, having left early from the Group of Seven (G-7) summit of Western leaders in Quebec, Canada.

After a 20-hour journey from Canada, Trump was received at the air base by Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

It's Kim's pursuit of nuclear weapons that gives his meeting with Trump such high stakes.

Kim's flight path meanwhile appeared to maximise time spent in Chinese airspace during the journey, including veering off to pass over the southernmost province Hainan Island, according to Flight Radar 24, a Swedish website providing real-time data.

Trump sent the city-state spinning when he announced that the summit would be held there last month, only to cancel it a week later.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un meets with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana or presidential palace on Sunday in Singapore.

The US president vowed to unleash "fire and fury" if Pyongyang kept threatening the US.

In return, Mr Kim called him "mentally deranged" and a "dotard".

North Korean soldiers keep watch toward the south in the village of Panmunjom, South Korea, on April 17. "People don't know much about him".

With his Singapore summit, Trump is looking to temporarily escape his flaring personal conflicts with key USA allies over trade as well as domestic pressure like the swirling Russian Federation probe. But after some diplomatic scrambling, the two leaders will now sit down together.
