North Korea leader Kim arrives in Singapore ahead of Trump meeting

"The senior officials of the party and government sincerely wished Kim Jong Un good successes in the first summit meeting and talks between the DPRK and the USA and his safe return", the KCNA said.

People try to get a peek of the vehicle carrying North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Saturday in Singapore ahead of the summit between the North Korean leader and Trump.

The meeting was Trump's only scheduled public event as White House officials prepared for the critical meeting on Tuesday with Kim.

Asked by VOA News whether he would bring up North Korea's egregious human rights record, including its system of gulags for civilians deemed enemies of the state, and the unresolved fate of Japanese abducted by North Korean agents over the decades, Trump replied, "We're going to bring everything up".

The summit - the first between a sitting U.S. president and any North Korean Leader - will mark a turnaround of relations between Trump and Kim after a long-running exchange of furious threats and insults.

The Trump-Kim summit is expected to cost about S$20 million ($15 million), Lee told Singaporean media on Sunday, with security costs representing about half the total.

Three planes took off in North Korea at about an hour's interval on Sunday - an IL-76, an Air China Boeing 747 and an ancient Ilyushin IL62 - leaving watchers in the dark about which one Kim was on.

The two sides met to narrow differences ahead of Tuesday's summit between Trump and Kim, at which the two leaders will discuss efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

The top U.S. and North Korean negotiators had earlier emerged from a last-ditch meeting at the Ritz Carlton with pursed lips, and no sign of whether an attempt to narrow the gap between USA and North Korean expectations of what denuclearisation should look like, had worked.

Later, Pompeo shared a picture of Trump speaking with the staff of the U.S. Embassy in Singapore.

US officials traveling with the president - as well as analysts - have acknowledged the risk that even the smallest of perceived slights by either side could prompt one of the leaders to instantly call it all off.

Kim has shown surprising diplomatic skills in his meetings with overseas leaders this year.

"And he has that opportunity, and he won't have that opportunity again", Trump said. "It's a one-time shot".

It formally referred to Trump by his full name in the Monday report, including his middle initial - the first time it has done so.

Despite the initial high stakes of a meeting meant to rid North Korea of its nuclear weapons, the talks have been portrayed by Trump in recent days more as a get-to-know meeting.

Trump, 71, landed at Paya Lebar Airbase on board Air Force One after cutting short his time at the G7 summit in Canada. He has also raised the possibility of further summits and an agreement ending the Korea War by replacing the armistice signed in 1953 with a peace treaty.

The previous United States stance, said Bruce Klingner of the Heritage Foundation, was that "we don't deploy a president to negotiate a treaty, we deploy a president to sign a treaty where we know where every piece of punctuation is on that piece of paper". Past nuclear deals have crumbled over North Korea's reluctance to open its doors to outsiders.

Trump and other top USA officials have promised a "bright future" for the North if it quickly relinquishes its nuclear weapons - including economic inducements and a security agreement.

A security guarantee could come in the form a peace treaty to formally end the Korean War.
