Nipah virus: Toll rises to 16, Kerala warns of second outbreak

Nipah Virus Be Careful In Consuming Fruits Says Delhi Government

All the people put under quarantine are advised to keep a check on their health at all times and inform health officers if any symptom breaks out.

Resin, 25, who died on Thursday, was initially treated at the Balussery hospital when another Nipah affected patient, Nikhil was undergoing treatment.

The government has also issued advisories for general public and healthcare personnel along with guidelines for sample collection for Nipah virus, hospital infection control and laboratory biosafety guidelines. The concerned people were reportedly in the contact list of those who have fallen victims to the deadly virus.

The staff, including nurses and four doctors of the hospital where the two patients died in the last two days, has been asked to go on leave for a week as a precautionary measure, said media reports quoting officials.

- In Kerala, a total of 16 people have died so far due to Nipah virus in two districts of Kerala after the confirmation of the virus being spread in the state on May 17, 2018. She was under observation for Nipah virus as she showed symptoms similar to those caused by the virus.

Earlier, the district collector had informed that the schools in Kozhikode and Malappuram district will reopen on June 5. "But anyone who has been in contact with patients needs to get themselves admitted if they are showing any symptoms", said KK Shylaja, the Health Minister of the state assuring that the state was prepared for the expected second round of infections. Similarly, the commission has indefinitely postponed the one-time verification of documents of candidates for the last grade servant post, scheduled at Kozhikode PSC office from June 1 to 8.

The report was being finalised, the source said.

The state has obtained about 50 doses of the antibody with the help of the Indian Council of Medical Research, the country's apex body for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, and the World Health Organisation.

The central experts from the National Centre for Disease Control are continuing to evaluate the situation and taking necessary measures, said a press release quoting the minister.
