Millennials Leave The Worst Tips, Survey Suggests

Dining out isn't the only area where millennials are skimping on tips, though.

Among diners age 38 and older, 51 percent say that they normally tip at least 20 percent at restaurants, while only 36 percent of Millennials are that generous.

The study surveyed 1,000 people, and revealed 10% of Americans ages 18 to 37 routinely leave no tip, and almost one in three leaves less than 15% when dining out.

When given an array of tipping options, such as one might find at a coffee shop, food truck or in a taxi or ride-hailing service, about one in six millennials said they regularly pick the lowest figure, and almost one in five select no tip.

Ten percent of Americans aged 18 to 37 said they routinely leave no gratuity for restaurant servers, while nearly one in three said they typically leave less than 15 percent, according to the findings.

"People have jobs, but they're not getting raises, and life is just expensive, especially when you're carrying student loan debt or other types of debt", Matt Schulz, a senior industry analyst for, said to Yahoo Finance. "It's across the board", Schulz said. "Older people really prefer tipping". "If somebody ends up cursing you out or spilling soup all over you, it's one thing if you don't tip", he said.

One silver lining: 42 percent of respondents overall said they tended to tip 20 percent.

Waiters and waitresses serving younger adults beware: you may not receive a big tip - or, in some cases, any at all.

The Emily Post Institute prescribes a 15 to 20 percent pre-tax tip for sit-down wait service at a restaurant and 10 percent pre-tax for wait service at a buffet. Lots of quasi-restaurants: coffee shops, poke bars, places that leave out a tip jar create an atmosphere that implies tipping is optional.

About 45 percent of the childless tip 20 percent, on average, compared to less than 34 percent of moms and dads.

About 27% of the surveyed young adults noted that they would prefer a system - similar to what is practiced in other countries - where the service charge is included in restaurant prices, instead of leaving a tip on top of the food price. Generation Xers feel the same, with 25 percent reporting they would rather ditch the tip in favor of a more costly meal, compared to just 13 percent of Baby Boomers. And seven in 10 millennial employees spent at least an hour volunteering in 2014.
