Merkel-Trump photos reveal power play at tense G7

G7 summit Donald Trump lashes out at America's key allies

President Donald Trump's chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow called comments by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G7 summit a "diplomatic betrayal".

At the G7 summit, Trump has said he wants to put an end to the United States' status as the world's "piggy bank" and suggested eliminating trade barriers between allies.

By midday Sunday, he had yet to address the Trump administration's taunts.

In an interview on Fox News Sunday, host Christ Wallace noted that Trump had ripped Trudeau on Twitter, calling him "dishonest and weak" because he gave a press conference after Trump had departed the G7 summit.

Having left the G7 summit in Canada early, Trump's announcement on Twitter that he was backing out of the joint communique torpedoed what appeared to be a fragile consensus on a trade dispute between Washington and its top allies.

That decision was "kind of insulting" to Canadian veterans who had stood by their U.S. allies in conflicts dating back to the first world war, Trudeau said.

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", Mr. Trudeau said.

"These are jointly shared principles, although the pitfalls lie in the details", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a press conference before the release of the communique. Trudeau made an error.

"And what did Trudeau did - do as soon as - as soon as the plane took off from Canadian airspace, Trudeau stuck our president in the back". "But President Trump has every right to push back publicly on this Trudeau amateur scheme".

For many in Europe, the question is now about how best to preserve any kind of multilateral cooperation.

Kudlow accused Trudeau of "pouring collateral damage" on the high-stakes talks with North Korea. "Is there any space for a multilateral order under these circumstances?" "But I don't see any fundamental problem in the Canadian-American trade relationship".

Internationally, one European diplomat says the rest of the G7 will carry on despite the president's online attack against Trudeau and his decision to pull out of the final G7 communique. But he also emphasised his belief that Trump's vision of America was at odds with American values.

The Prime Minister said she had used the event as a chance to register the UK's "deep disappointment" with President Trump's plans. "To find itself isolated in a concert of nations is contrary to American history".

Ahmad added: "The prime minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the president".

Shortly after Trump's tweets, US Senator John McCain responded. The talks on trade were not contentious, according to Trump.

Before heading to the summit, he had engaged in a bitter back-and-forth with both leaders over Twitter, criticizing Canada and the European Union for their unfair trade practices.

Trump himself insisted relationships with allies were a "ten" just before he left the summit.

Germany also said it would abide by the communique. "The president acted and reacted in the childish way he could be expected to". Trump continued to ruffle feathers by threatening to end all trade with G-7 nations if they did not retool their "unfair" trade practices with the United States.

"I don't know anything about that", Kudlow said.

Prior to his arrival on Friday, the president injected additional controversy by suggesting that the G-7 offer a seat at the table to Russian Federation, which was ousted from the group in 2014.
