Kim thanks S'pore for 'sincere efforts' to host summit

Trump predicts ‘terrific relationship’ with Kim Jong Un as historic summit begins

US President Donald Trump shook the hand of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un when the two met Tuesday morning local time, an extraordinary display of diplomacy that reflects an unprecedented gamble for two unpredictable leaders intent on making their mark on history.

During a tour of various attractions in Singapore on Monday, Kim said "Singapore is clean and handsome and every building is stylish" as he had heard of in the past, according to the KCNA.

After initial exchanges lasting around 40 minutes, Trump and Kim emerged, walking side-by-side through the colonnaded hotel before entering a meeting room, where they were joined by their most senior officials.

Trump initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States, insisting he would swiftly achieve what previous USA administrations have failed to do.

In the past two months, he has met twice with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and twice with China's leader Xi Jinping.

Sung Kim arrives at the Ritz-Carlton hotel to meet with North Korean vice-foreign minister Choe Son Hui, June 11, 2018, in Singapore.

"He's one of the best negotiators of all time and I'm looking forward to him adding to his historic success at the Singapore Summit", Rodman wrote.

After a handshake, they were soon smiling and holding each other by the arm, before Trump guided Kim to the library where they held a meeting with only their interpreters.

Trump has said he hopes to make a legacy-defining deal for the North to give up its nuclear weapons, though he has recently sought to minimize expectations, saying additional meetings may be necessary.

A chief nuclear strategist for decades, he authored the letter responding to Trump's decision to cancel the summit, saying North Korea was still willing "to sit down face-to-face with the US and resolve issues anytime and in any format".

USA and North Korean officials have been holding preliminary meetings in the run-up to the Tuesday summit. Four of the nation's six nuclear tests have taken place since Kim took power in 2011.

It's not just the logistics of Kim's trip that are unclear. That day, he and the president ended up meeting for over an hour. Asked Saturday about his goals, he said: "Well, I think the minimum would be relationship".

Trump has also raised the possibility of further summits and an agreement ending the Korean War by replacing the armistice signed in 1953 with a peace treaty. "You would start at least a dialogue, because, you know, as a deal person, I have done very well with deals".

"The entire world is focusing on the historic summit between the DPRK and the USA, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparations for the historic summit", Mr Kim told Mr Lee through an interpreter. He told reporters he thinks he will know nearly immediately whether a deal can be made, saying: "I will know, just my touch, my feel".
