Kia recalls 65,000 vehicles in Canada for airbag glitch

Kia recalls sedans, minivans for air bag flaw

A Kia recall was issued on Friday as some of the company's vehicles have issues with their airbags that may prevent them from getting deployed.

Kia will recall more than 500,000 cars due to an air bag flaw by the end of July, an NHTSA release shows.

The recall covers about 507,587 vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) website. Four people died and six were injured.

In total, the two Korean automakers have now recalled almost 1.1 million USA vehicles to address the issue.

The agency says four crashes occurred in Sonatas and two happened in Fortes. It explained that the vehicles' susceptibility to electrical overstress can cause a short circuit that prevents both the frontal airbags and seatbelt pretensioners, which hold the driver and the front seat passenger in place in the event of a collision, from working. The safety agency said at the time it had reports of six front-end crashes with significant damage to the cars. Hyundai says the recall now includes all vehicles with the same air bag computers. One Forte crash happened in Canada. The statement said ZF is cooperating with the government investigation.

In March, NHTSA said it was investigating if other automakers used similar air back control units and if they could pose a risk.
