KFC is experimenting with vegetarian fried chicken

United Kingdom health officials have launched a campaign that encourages people to aim for 400 calories for breakfast, 600 for lunch and 600 for dinner, plus balanced choices in between.

In the USA market, KFC has no plans for meatless chicken offerings "at this time", however food industry experts say vegetarianism is on the rise and the restaurant industry is looking to meet changing demand. As far as its secret blend of herbs and spices, KFC says all 11 of those ingredients will be on the new vegetarian option, too.

In addition to the vegetarian option, KFC has said it will offer low or zero calorie soft drinks and trial a behavioral change program created to "nudge" consumers toward lighter options.

The company said that after perfecting the recipe, it aims to test it with customers "and if all goes well, we hope to launch a new vegetarian option in 2019".

For those anxious about losing the authenticity and tradition of KFC's iconic eleven herbs and spices, the chain promises that the same spice mix used to compliment its regular fried chicken variety will be preserved in the new menu item.

KFC UK & Ireland's foray into vegetarian dishes stems from a growing trend not just in Europe, but also in the U.S. More people want to have healthier lifestyles and to know what's in their food, experts say.

McDonald's introduced a soy-based McVegan burger to its restaurants in Sweden and Finland in late December. In April, White Castle introduced a plant-based version of its cheese slider in its stores in New York, New Jersey and Chicago.

KFC is not the only company looking to shake up its established menu. And late a year ago, McDonald's added its faux beef burger, called the McVegan, to menus in Sweden and Finland. Double and triple digits.
