Has Theresa May only delayed her Brexit defeat by a few days?

"The government can not demonstrate the flexibility necessary for a successful deal if its hands are tied midway through that process", Davis said.

British Prime Minister Theresa May faces a knife-edge vote in parliament on June 12 on her centrepiece Brexit legislation, despite her last-minute warning that defeat risks undermining her negotiations with Brussels.

It followed a strained parliamentary session, where the deep nationwide divisions opened up by Britain's vote to leave the European Union in 2016 were on display, with pro-EU lawmakers saying they had received death threats.

It sets up the prospect of frantic efforts by Mrs May to appease both Leave and Remain sides of her parties, as well as another potential crunch vote in the House of Commons next week.

Just three hours later, ministers caved in.

Some lawmakers tried to shout him down and accused the government of wanting too much power.

Earlier the government avoided a major defeat in a key vote on changes to the Brexit bill.

Pro-EU lawmakers, however, welcomed it as a signal that the government was moving towards ruling out a hardline "no deal" Brexit. The news they all voted against is no surprise, as the party supports not leaving the European Union altogether.

The change reduces the likelihood that Britain could leave the European Union without a deal if it does not like the divorce terms.

"The prime minister said that the votes were important in terms of the message they send to Brussels", May's spokesman said she told her cabinet team of ministers.

The government was putting a combative spin on the concessions Tuesday evening: "The Brexit Secretary has set out three tests that any new amendment has to meet - not undermining the negotiations, not changing the constitutional role of Parliament and Government in negotiating global treaties, and respecting the referendum result", a spokesperson for the Brexit department said in a statement.

Raising a point of order in the House of Commons, Soubry - who is a Remainer and has herself suffered abuse in the lead-up to Tuesday's Brexit vote - told the House: "To my knowledge at least one honourable member on these benches will today and tomorrow not vote in accordance with their conscience because of threats to their personal safety, to members of their parliamentary staff and members of their family".

The most contentious was the bid to give Parliament the power to tell the government what to do if the Brexit deal was voted down or no agreement was reached.

The amendment could effectively hand control of the Brexit process to parliament if it goes ahead. Theresa May has said no British government would ever agree to a hard border there.

"Thirdly, we must under all circumstances respect the result of the referendum".

May objected to the amendment - inserted by the House of Lords - because she said it would tie her hands in the negotiation.

Earlier, May appeared to have also stemmed a rebellion on Wednesday over her commitment to leaving the EU's customs union which will transform Britain's trading relationships for decades to come.

If May is defeated in the House of Commons it will be yet another blow to a prime minister whose authority has been challenged several times since last year's election. She now relies on the support of a small Northern Irish party.

Either way, the chances are increasing that Parliament will get a greater say over Brexit.

"I trust our PM to honor the undertaking she gave", said Anna Soubry, one of the pro-EU Tory rebels.
