Government forced to climbdown to avoid Brexit vote defeat

Prime Minister Theresa May could face a possible backbench revolt and she has urged potential Conservative rebels to support the government.

The issue of a "meaningful vote" is set to be a flashpoint in the Commons, with ministers seeking to overturn a Lords amendment which would give Parliament extensive powers to direct ministers how to proceed if a deal with Brussels is rejected by MPs or no deal is reached. The results could also deliver a further blow to Prime Minister Theresa May's authority, which was severely damaged when she.

The European Union Withdrawal Bill, a complex piece of legislation meant to disentangle Britain from the bloc, has had a rocky ride through Parliament.

She told BBC Radio 4's World At One that "at least half a dozen" junior ministers had been "very uncomfortable for some time" at the Government's direction on Brexit. Although, as things stand, they will not be able to send the government back into negotiations if they reject an agreement with the EU.

Britain is due to leave on March 29, 2019, and the bloc is frustrated with what it sees as a lack of firm proposals from the U.K about future relations.

Rebel Tories within Commons changed course and decide not to vote against the government.

"The Government's amendment today provides for a meaningful vote".

In a painful blow the the PM, Remain-supporting MP Philip Lee quit as justice minister this morning, saying he could not support "how our country's exit from the European Union looks set to be delivered". It also attacked the unelected nature of the House of Lords (which traditionally scrutinizes laws passed to it by the elected lower chamber), linking it to a perceived attempt to frustrate the Brexit process.

"It enables parliament to dictate to the government their course of action in global negotiations".

A paper laying out the UK government position, due to be published this month, has been delayed because the Cabinet can not agree on a united stance.

Conservative MP Sarah Wollaston said on Monday morning she was "minded" to defy party orders and back the meaningful vote amendment.

Britain's highest-selling tabloid, The Sun, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch, addressed lawmakers directly on its front page, saying they faced a choice between "Great Britain or Great Betrayal".

Britons voted 52 percent to 48 percent in favor of exiting the European Union in a June 2016 referendum.

It featured a British flag and the headline: "Ignore the will of the people at your peril".

They have an ace up their sleeve as they go into talks with the government: if May reneges on her pledge, pro-EU members of the House of Lords will amend her legislation again.

"The people want us to leave the EU".
