Germany must rebuild collective power after Mexico tore it apart

Germany forward Thomas Mueller

Germany had 26 shots, the most by a team without scoring in a World Cup match since 2006.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Mexico boss Juan Carlos Osorio claimed his players could go "toe-to-toe" with Germany.

Osorio survived calls for his head after his team were thrashed 7-0 by Chile at the Copa America Centenario two years ago.

In short, Germany's defensive press-for the first hour, at least-looked as laboured and cringeworthy as MP Marlene McDonald chasing Michelle-Lee Ahye up the Lady Chancellor hill.

In Mexico City, around 20,000 fans gathered to celebrate the victory at the Angel of Independence monument on the capital's most famous boulevard, Paseo de la Reforma.

The only other time Mexico had beaten Germany was in a 1985 friendly.

They were nearly punished in the last minute when second-half substitute Julian Brandt nearly stole a point for the European giants, but his thunderous volley shaved the left upright. Only two teams prior, Italy in 1938 and Brazil in 1962 had managed to do it. "Teams develop and change, players finish their careers and you must bring in new players which makes it the most hard achievement". More reliance was on speed and movement on the counterattack. So I thought I would have good time worshipping but ended up working inside the church.

Mexico, meanwhile, were lively and full of energy and the front three of Javier Hernandez, Hirving Lozano and Carlos Vela combined early on to force Jerome Boateng into a last-ditch tackle. Kimmich's absence meant Ozil was left trying to stop Lozano for Mexico's opening goal.

Neuer hasn't played for his club, Bayern Munich, since September, only playing the two warm-up games against Austria and Saudi Arabia, but Loew had been insistent that he was his first-choice goalkeeper. From there, they had Germany rattled and fully deserved the goal from Hirving Lozano when it came. Kimmich was fouled just outside the area and Toni Kroos nearly equalised with a sublime curling free-kick that was pushed onto the crossbar by Ochoa. Otherwise, the Mexican were throwing their bodies at every German attempt.

The German coach is in the crosshairs after sticking with a lacklustre Mesut Ozil instead of speedy in-form winger Marco Reus, and setting his team up in such a way that allowed the Mexicans to launch countless counter-attacks. The equaliser never came.

One which circulated widely showed a photograph of German Chancellor Angela Merkel with a telephone to her ear accompanied by the text: "Donald?"

Mexico has made it out of the group stage at the previous six World Cups, only to be eliminated in the first game of the knockout round year after year, but after El Tri's shocking upset win over Germany, this could be the year they break the spell. Germany and Loew have work to do to avoid that fate.
