Germany: Interior minister gives Merkel ultimatum on migrants

"We stick to our position that should the immediate rejection at the border not be possible, I would immediately order the police that people who either have prohibition of entry or prohibition of stay should be immediately turned away at the border", he said.

She asked the CSU to give her two weeks to come up with deals similar to one agreed between Turkey and the European Union in 2016, which means migrants arriving in Greece are sent back to Turkey if they do not apply for asylum.

President Donald Trump has attempted to blame Democrats for the separations at the border, but the situation is the sole result of a new Trump Department of Justice policy enacted in early April which mandates that all adults trying to cross the border be treated as criminals.

But after the pair agreed last October to try to limit Germany's refugee intake to 200,000 a year - a policy Seehofer had long called for and Merkel had previously ruled out - tensions seemed to fade.

Seehofer also sacked Jutta Cordt, the head of the Office for Migrants and Refugees (BAMF), an interior ministry spokesman said late Friday. But the state has since soured on such generosity.

Merkel's ruling coalition has fractured over a new proposed policy that would turn away more asylum seekers at the country's borders.

The chancellor and her Christian Democrats pledged in the agreement defining the terms of their government that 2015 would remain an exception that was not to be repeated.

The poor showing also set off an internal power struggle: Seehofer salvaged his job as party leader but gave up the Bavarian governor's job to younger rival Markus Soeder. And she has stuck to her insistence that there needs to be a European-wide solution to migration issues, despite a lack of progress so far.

Merkel emphasized the need for Germany's conservative parties to stick together, but she and Seehofer may only have delayed a head-on clash.

"An important part of the masterplan is the possibility of turning people back at the border", Soeder told reporters ahead of the meeting in Munich.

The defiance by Merkel's smaller, more conservative Bavarian sister party is still a blow to the chancellor and will further embolden the hard-line stances of countries such as Hungary, Italy and Austria.

The chancellor, who is scheduled to meet her French counterpart Emmanuel Macron next week, said Germany and France would seek to set the agenda for European Union cooperation on defense, security and foreign policy ahead of the June summit.

NBC News says she managed to "sidestepped a major political crisis" by securing more time to resolve the coalition rift over border controls.

An act of rebellion from Seehofer could force her to sack him, which "would be the end of the government and the alliance between CDU and CSU", an unnamed CDU source told Bild.

"This was done by the President, not Democrats", Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement.

Merkel later on Monday met Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte for talks in Berlin and said Berlin wanted to support Rome in its efforts to reduce the number of migrants arriving on its shores, possibly handling asylum requests for the European Union in non-European countries including Libya.

Italy's support will be crucial if the chancellor is to draw up a joint European Union agreement on the issue.
