Germany hits Mercedes with mass diesel recall

As a result, the German manufacturer will have to update the engine software in the affected models.

"The government will order 238 000 Daimler vehicles to be immediately recalled Germany-wide because of unauthorised defeat devices", the ministry said in a statement.

Last week, German transport minister Andreas Scheuer threatened to sue Daimler to the tune of 3.75 billion euros (about RM17.6 billion) if Mercedes-Benz was found to have cheated emissions regulators with "defeat devices" installed in its diesel-powered cars.

Dieter Zetsche, chairman of Mercedes' parent company Daimler, is believed to have met with the KBA to discuss their findings. Among the functions brought into question by the German Transport Ministry is the software used to regulate the amount of Ad Blue solution injected into the SCR filter that's fitted to the recalled vehicles.

In January 2017, USA regulators ordered a stop-sale of several Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' diesel-powered models, including its Jeep Grand Cherokee, after regulators said it emitted more nitrogen oxide than allowed by law. A statement posted to Twitter confirmed that Daimler will go ahead with the ordered action.

This latest development follows news past year that saw Daimler accused of selling over one million cars with excess emissions in Europe and the United States, following earlier reports in the German media.

The reports allege that two engines (OM 642 and OM 651) come with devices that shut down emissions controls under certain situations.

A Daimler spokesman said he would not comment on the BamS story, adding, "We are cooperating to a full extent and transparently with the KBA and the federal transport ministry".

At the time of the allegations, FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne struck a similar tone to Daimler; both automakers said the emissions control devices were legal.

'We don't see any evidence that Daimler was designing software to deliberately cheat on emission testing, ' he said.

According to specialist Arndt Ellinghorst, an analyst with Evercore ISI in London, the recall will cost the automaker less than $120 million.
