Geraint Thomas wins Criterium du Dauphine for Team Sky

Ireland's Dan Martin resisted a late challenge from Sky's Welsh all-rounder Geraint Thomas to clinch his first win in 16 months on FridayMore

Ireland's Dan Martin resisted a late challenge from Welsh all-rounder Geraint Thomas to clinch his first win in 16 months after a thrilling summit duel at the Criterium de Dauphine on Friday.

Team Sky's Thomas came home 21 seconds behind Spain's Bilbao (Astana), who staged a heroic solo effort 12 kilometres from the finish to triumph.

Geraint Thomas took second place behind stage victor Pello Bilbao to extend his overall lead with just one day remaining at the Critérium du Dauphiné in La Rosière Espace San Bernardo.

Thomas added to ITV: "I always felt in control, I always felt pretty good, but I didn't want to get too carried away (on the final climb)". I can rest a little bit and wait for July.

And Yates' second place ensured the first ever British one-two in the race, with his second win on the WorldTour in 2018 confirming both he and the Welshman will head to the Tour de France in top form.

"It's not a great situation for him, the team or just cycling in general", Thomas said.

It gave them a 19 second lead over Team Sunweb and a 27 second advantage over Quick-Step Floors.

England's Adam Yates, who's twin Simon wore the pink jersey at the Giro d'Italia for 13 stages in May, was third on the day at 15 seconds.

Thomas managed to close the gap on the peloton within 15km, but was far from happy with the conduct of AG2R as he informed Romain Bardet when he caught up with the French rider.

"I knew I had about one minute 20 seconds to lose on Yatesy so at 200 (metres) to go, when they started sprinting for the win, I was relieved", Thomas was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Thomas now leads Yates by 1:29 in the overall standings.
