Ethiopian PM escapes grenade attack, one dead, scores hurt

Ethiopian Satellite Television is among the broadcasters allowed back on air

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said a "well-orchestrated attack" that injured scores of people in the capital Addis Ababa has failed to sow discord as the country embarks on a series of political and economic reforms. There were no immediate details of any casualties, the BBC reported citing the local media.

"Abiy's effort to move the country forward has angered those who for a very long time maintained a stronghold on the country's politics and economy", Mohammed Ademo, political commentator and founder of, an independent news website on Ethiopia, told Al Jazeera.

Eritrea's longtime President Isaias Afwerki noted "positive signals" in recent days from Ethiopia and said the delegation will "gauge current developments directly and in depth" to plan future steps.

"He told them they represent the true spirit of love, forgiveness & togetherness", Fitsum, Abiy's chief of staff, said Saturday. You need to stop doing this.

"The people who did this are anti-peace forces".

"Love always wins. Killing others is a defeat", he said.

Abiy became prime minister after his predecessor Hailemariam Desalegn unexpectedly resigned in February.

The movement said its goal was "the realization of a national political system in which government power and political authority is assumed through peaceful and democratic process based on the free will and choice of citizens of the country".

At the rally, people wore T-shirts proclaiming support for Abiy but also openly displayed the flags of banned groups such as the Oromo Liberation Front, an act that would usually result in arrest.

Following the one-day visit of Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed to Mogadishu, there were speculations that Somali leaders handed over the country's main ports to Ethiopia, a landlocked country which lost its ports after Eritrea broke away.

"Eritrea strongly condemns the attempt to incite violence in today's Addis Ababa demonstration for peace, (the) first of its kind in history of Ethiopia", its ambassador to Japan Estifano Afeworki tweeted.

The blast came just as the master of ceremonies was welcoming viewers from overseas and said in English "this is the day that Ethiopia has become proud".

Ethiopia's reformist new prime minister is expected to address the nation shortly after an explosion disrupted a huge rally where he had been addressing supporters.

On June 5, Addis Ababa announced that it will fully accept the terms of a 2000 peace agreement with Asmara which ended a two-year war, in a major step towards calming deadly tensions with its decades-long rival.
