England's Dele Alli vows to avoid retrospective punishment at World Cup

Dele Alli in England training

Former Arsenal and England defender Tony Adams has said he's anxious about England's contingent of Tottenham players ahead of this summer's FIFA World Cup. And in a World Cup qualifier against Slovakia he appeared to direct a middle finger at the referee (he claimed it was aimed at Kyle Walker) and was subsequently banned for one match.

"I haven't been on the Tube to see it for myself, but I hear I'm at the top of every escalator", said Alli. But I really like Dele Alli - he's a lot like a Brazilian player.

He admitted they have to be more careful, adding: "At the World Cup the refs and linesmen are all from a very high level anyway, so you are always aware, and it's part of football. If you look at my record, I've definitely learned from my mistakes".

"When you're playing the games, you are focused on trying to help the team as much as you can", said the 22-year-old, who has represented England on 25 occasions. You have to stay concentrated and you can't do stupid things.

"I've got everything under control, that's not what I'm worrying about".

Despite overtaking their North London rivals in recent years and becoming a regular feature in the Champions League, without silverware, Adams isn't having it; "You must be able to handle winning emotionally and mentally, and if they don't know how to win it, they aren't going to win it".

"Everyone wants to play and the manager has to pick 11 when there are 23 to choose from, so I'm just one of many people who want to be in the team".

Eric Dier and Dele Alli are Tottenham Hotspur and England teammates.

Legendary defender Roberto Carlos expects big things from Dele Alli at the World Cup, describing the England man as a player "with Brazilian swagger".
