Elon Musk Says Tesla Self-Driving Features Will Start Arriving in August

An update to Tesla's Autopilot software coming in August will enable "full self-driving features" for the automaker's electric cars, chief executive Elon Musk says.

The new Tesla Roadster could come with not one or two but "10 small rocket thrusters" for "top speed" company CEO Elon Musk said via his Twitter account.

The features will be "enabled" on Tesla vehicles equipped with Autopilot 2.0. Previous updates to Autopilot were "rightly focused entirely on safety", he said.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed in a recent announcement that the automaker's forthcoming super auto - the next-generation Roadster - will feature an "Augmented Mode" which will enable the drivers to handle the vehicle's power.

He's tweeted that the latest Autopilot software rolling out is "fully fixed in August update as part of our long-awaited Tesla Version 9".

It's not clear which features will arrive first, but Tesla says its full self-driving will allow the auto to figure out routes, navigate streets without lane markings, manage intersections with traffic lights, stop signs, and roundabouts, and handle highways. The company clearly states the facts of life: "Self-Driving functionality is dependent upon extensive software validation and regulatory approval, which may vary widely by jurisdiction".

Looking through the recorded performance data, the autopilot system was engaged on four separate occasions during the 32-minute trip, including a continuous operation for the last 18 minutes 55 seconds prior to the crash.

While Tesla is selling a full self-driving package, that does not mean that consumers will be able to use it immediately. Tesla has been going through trying times with the production of the Model 3 not going as planned but is expected to reach the target soon.

General Motors said last week that its driver assistance feature, Super Cruise, will allow drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel for extended periods, but will stop the vehicle automatically if drivers are not attentive.
