Dixons Carphone hit with major data breach

Currys PC World

What's more some 5.8 million credit card details may have been exposed in the process, alongside 1.2 million instances of non-financial personal data.

The company said in a statement: Our investigation is ongoing and now indicates that there was an attempt to compromise 5.9 million cards in one of the processing systems of Currys PC World and Dixons'. As of now, there are no known cases of any fraudulent use of the compromised data, the company claims.

While attackers attempted to access 5.9 million card details, the company states that chip-and-pin protection should prevent 5.8 million of the cards being used for fraud.

It admitted non-financial personal data, such as name, address or email address, was accessed but it again insisted that it had seen no evidence of any fraud at this stage.

"Cybercrime is a continual battle for business today and we are determined to tackle this fast-changing challenge", Chief Executive Officer Alex Baldock said in the statement.

"We've taken action to close off this unauthorised access and though we have now no evidence of fraud as a result of these incidents, we are taking this extremely seriously", he added.

Shares in Dixons Carphone, which issued a profit warning last month, fell as much as 6.4 percent on Wednesday, taking year-on-year losses to 37 percent.

In a statement released this morning, the company said during a review of systems and data, it discovered that there has been "unauthorised access to certain data held by the company". Paul German, CEO at Certes Networks, commented: "Despite the well-publicised Target data breach, it seems that other retailers are still not adopting appropriate cybersecurity strategies".

Some security experts said that the leaked personal information was arguably a greater threat than the compromised card data.

"The National Cyber Security Centre is working with Dixons Carphone plc and other agencies to understand how this data breach has affected people in the United Kingdom and advise on mitigation measures", an NCSC spokesperson told ZDNet.

While the breach took place last July, Dixons Carphone only realised that it had occurred in the last week and the notification delay of nearly a year was not a case of the firm covering up the fact, allegedly.
