Ditching entourages, Trump and Kim Jong Un to meet 1 on 1

Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un arrive in Singapore for historic summit

President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un are set for a historic summit on Tuesday, June 12.

Trump landed at Paya Lebar Airbase on board Air Force One after cutting short his time at the G7 summit in Canada.

He joined Singapore's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, who took a selfie, before stopping at the Marina Bay Sands hotel, which resembles a giant surfboard perched on three tall columns, for a look out over the bright lights of the city from its rooftop garden and swimming pool. But on the eve of the summit, he altered his schedule, opting to return at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday after a full day of meetings with Kim - nearly 15 hours earlier than previously anticipated.

Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-un's sister is also in Singapore.

On Sunday, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong met with Kim following the latter's arrival in the country for the upcoming talks with Trump, scheduled for Tuesday.

He thanked Singapore's organisation of the summit as if it was "their own family affair".

Less than a week before the summit, Trump dismissed questions about his readiness, saying, "I don't think I have to prepare very much".

The summit is seemingly created to focus on North Korea's nuclear arsenal, though the details surrounding it remain hazy and it's not clear exactly what Trump and Kim will discuss when they initially meet.

At around 6:00 p.m. (6:00 a.m. ET) motorcycles and police vehicles were seen gathering outside the St. Regis Hotel, where the leader is staying during the highly-anticipated summit.

In an op-ed, the Washington Post emphasises how the USA president "has shown an ability to develop seemingly good relationships with some world leaders, and then to undermine them with unexpected words or actions".

But beating expectations in a face-to-face meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will be hard - because Trump has set the bar so high.

In return, Kim, said to be in his mid-thirties, called Trump "mentally deranged" and a "dotard".

Rodong Sinmun newspaper also seems to be preparing people for talks with the "enemy", publishing an editorial on North Korea's need to establish relations with other countries.

The North has presented Kim's sudden diplomatic overtures to the country's neighbours and the United States as a logical next step and completion of his plan to develop a credible nuclear deterrent in response to what Pyongyang says is a policy of "nuclear blackmail" by Washington.

Mr. Trump's top economic adviser, Lawrence Kudlow, said Mr. Trudeau's press conference had been a "betrayal" because Mr. Trump couldn't afford to show any weakness before his meeting with North Korea.

The summit represents a major gamble for each leader, a high-wire act that carries the elevated potential for risk and reward that Trump has become increasingly comfortable with.

According to the White House, the plan for the summit is that after initial greetings Mr Trump and Mr Kim will hold a one-on-one meeting, then an expanded meeting with other representatives before a working lunch.

Another Pyongyang report quoting Kim Yong-nam, the nominal head of state, as telling leader Kim to achieve outstanding outcomes from the summit with the U.S. has also drawn attention.

"It also may be a personalistic choice, reflecting Kim Jong-un's confidence in Kim Yong-chol".

"I can only say this", Pompeo said.

Offering a preview to reporters, Pompeo said it could provide "an unprecedented opportunity to change the trajectory of our relationship and bring peace and prosperity" to North Korea.
