Coronary heart disease on the rise: Minister

Around 315 million people smoke in China consuming more than a third of the world's cigarettes

Despite the devastating harm of tobacco to heart health and availability of solutions to reduce tobacco-related deaths and diseases, knowledge among a majority of the public that tobacco is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease (CVD), is low. "It's an irony that in coming 24 hours, 2,739 people will lose their lives due to cancer caused by use of tobacco and other tobacco products.because the quit rate is very low - only about three per cent in India", Sambandh Health Foundation trustee Sanjay Seth said.

He said: "More than 19,000 people die from tobacco use or second hand smoke exposure every day".

"As such, quitting is the only way to dramatically reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and a variety of cancers". PMI is publishing informational advertisements highlighting that people who smoke deserve the opportunity to learn about smoke-free alternatives to cigarettes.

The 2018 World Tobacco Day Theme is "Tobacco and heart disease". It has also been revealed that 7.1% in Andhra use smokeless tobacco which was way lesser than the national average of 21.4%.

A new World Health Organization report reveals that tobacco wastes contains 7,000 toxic chemicals that poison the environment, including human carcinogens; tobacco smoke emissions contribute thousands of tons of human carcinogens, toxicants and greenhouse gasses to the environment.

"Everyday people pick up tobacco, and it can affect their health in negative ways and things like that", said Jordan Darensbourg.

Tobacco smoke contains 4,000 chemicals, of which 250 are known to be harmful for humans and 70 of them cause cancers.

The proposed measure is being studied by Health Department officials, Ginette Petitpas Taylor said Thursday as she announced Canada's tobacco strategy.

These include making indoor public and workplaces smoke-free and insisting that tobacco packaging carries warnings that demonstrate the health risks for users.

Latest data from the WHO report indicates that there are around 1.1 billion smokers in the world today - the same number as at the turn of the century.

"The percentage of adults who do not believe smoking causes stroke are for example in China as high as 73 percent, for heart attacks 61 percent of adults in China are not aware that smoking increases the risk", Bettcher said. "The results of the 2016 Surveillance (STEPS) Population Survey of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) showed that 20 per cent, or about 60,000 Bruneians aged 18-69 are smokers".

According to a 2016 USA study, electronic cigarettes are also just as damaging to gums and teeth as conventional tobacco cigarettes.

Almost 80% of the more than 1 billion smokers worldwide live in low-and middle-income countries, where the burden of tobacco-related illness and death is heaviest.

Vietnam is among the 15 countries with the world's highest smoking prevalence among male adults when one in every two male adults is a smoker.
