Chelsea season ticket holder offers £2billion to Roman Abramovich for the club

Britain's richest man 'offers to buy' Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for £2BILLION

Britain's richest man, Jim Ratcliffe, has approached Roman Abramovich to discuss buying Chelsea Football Club after the Russian billionaire's future in Britain was thrown into doubt.

British businessman Jim Ratcliffe was linked to taking over Chelsea football club as Abramovich's successor but Chelsea rejected his offer after an approach.

Chelsea's Russian owner is now embroiled in a United Kingdom visa clash with the Home Office, leading to him shelving plans for a new stadium in West London.

Ratcliffe, 65 and with an estimated fortune of about £21billion, who is also a fan of Manchester United reportedly made the offer as the diplomatic row between Britain and Russian Federation raged in the aftermath of the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

Ineos already owns Swiss side Lausanne-Sport.

Last month's Sunday Times rich list valued Ratcliffe's wealth at £21.05bn - more than double Abramovich's £9.3bn valuation.

Ratcliffe, who grew up in a council house in Failsworth - a small town between Manchester and Oldham - was asked in a recent interview about his education and replied: 'I just played football, really.

It means there's been speculation that Abramovich could up sticks after buying Chelsea for £140million in 2003. He took on the club's debts, which were estimated at £80m, and has ploughed hundreds of millions into Chelsea, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League. The 51-year-old was also granted Israeli citizenship which meant that he could visit Britain up to six months in a year but will have to apply for a work permit if he wants to keep doing business in the United Kingdom.

A spokesman for Ineos said in response: "We can't comment on market rumour or speculation".
