Canadian soccer official calls 2026 World Cup bid vote a 'watershed moment'

FIFA World Cup 2018 to Kick Off With Opening Ceremony, Russia-Saudi Arabia Match

And unlike past World Cup hosting decisions, it is being made by the 211 FIFA members associations (minus the bidding countries and any under suspension) as opposed to the FIFA executive committee.

"Our country is ready to host the FIFA World Cup, and provide everyone who will come to Russian Federation with maximum comfort and the best emotions possible", Putin said at the 68th FIFA Congress, held in Moscow on Wednesday.

Earlier on Wednesday, the congress voted to grant the 2026 World Cup to a joint bit by Canada, the United States and Mexico. Their lone opponent was Morocco.

"Thank you for entrusting us with this privilege, the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026", an emotional US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said on stage after the vote. As the joint bid officially put it, it has 23 "fully built, occupied, and operational" stadiums already, "150 existing world-class training facilities, millions of hotel rooms, and advanced infrastructure".

Canada, meanwhile, did not even make it that far, finishing third behind Mexico and Honduras in the fourth round.

Part of the United bid guaranteed all games would be played on natural grass, which means if Commonwealth Stadium is chosen as a final venue, the artificial turf would be replaced for the tournament.

The VAR will be overseen remotely from a control room in Moscow throughout the tournament and, in a bid to control sweat levels, FIFA is insisting they forgo civilian suits and ties in favour of football shirts and shorts.

The last time the US hosted the World Cup was 1994, when Soldier Field was the site of five games, and also hosted the opening ceremony, emceed by Oprah Winfrey. "Majority have now either retired or grown too old to still be in reckoning for national duty", said Malosolov. The four countries directly involved (USA, Canada, Mexico and Morocco) and three US-governed territories (Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa and the US Virgin Islands).

The 2026 finals will be the first expanded tournament featuring 48 teams, up from the current 32-team event.

The host team always qualifies for the tournament, but there are questions about whether or not all three countries will be given automatic berths.

With the successful bid, the men's World Cup will be coming to Canada for the first time.

The 2026 World Cup could turn out to be one of the most significant developments to American soccer in a long time.
