Canadian F1 Grand Prix 2018 Qualifying: Saturday's Results, Times, Final Grid

Canadian Grand Prix - Strategy guide

"But to sit in that vehicle in front of this crowd - some of it from when I was racing, some from when my dad was racing - it was very special".

Lance Stroll of Montreal, the first Canadian to race in F1 since Jacques Villeneuve left in 2006, qualified 17th as his Williams team's struggles continued.

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas finished in second, making it his fourth podium here in a row while Red Bull's Max Verstappen makes his first podium in Canada in P3.

"I don't think the Hypersoft is a good race tyre", the four-time world champion stated to Autosport.

But Vettel passed the Briton for a one-point lead in drivers standings.

Hamilton, fourth at the time, headed into the pit lane on lap 16 of this 70-lap race, but the early change of tyres allowed Ricciardo to usurp the Mercedes vehicle. The Briton has won the last three on the track that seems to suit the Mercedes vehicle with its heavy braking after long straightaways and tight chicanes.

But Hamilton, so often the master here in Montreal, had to settle for fifth on a weekend to forget for the defending champion and his team. He was on the back foot when the race began, having started from fourth on the grid.

Now there is also a huge gap between the top six (Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull) and the rest of the field - a gap that was up to almost a full minute Sunday with a dozen laps to go.

"We were briefly talking about what we wanted to do, trying to figure everything out".

Verstappen believes Red Bull have some pace in hand though with more to be found overnight ahead of qualifying.

He admitted: "We were coming to Montreal expecting our vehicle to be really strong and we are leaving Montreal seeing that we haven't been where we thought we should be".

Kimi Raikkonen in the other Ferrari and Monaco victor Daniel Ricciardo are in the third row. That meant Hamilton's engine was into its seventh Grand Prix weekend - and it was seemingly beginning to feel the strain... "To have a race like we had today is unbelievable".

"Our goal is to finish every single race so I'm hoping for the reliability and I can try and make the difference on the track with my driving". "Thanks to the team for fixing the auto yesterday after I hit the wall". "We've seen this year it's very close between the three teams and the six drivers so we'll see, but for sure if you start on pole you want to win".
