Boeing Unveils Hypersonic Concept Aircraft

A radical hypersonic passenger plane that could travel 6,500km h was unveiled by American manufacturer Boeing

The sleek concept, one of multiple hypersonic planes that Boeing engineers are studying, was unveiled at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics conference in Atlanta.

Bigger than a conventional private jet but smaller than a Boeing 737, the sleek beyond-supersonic jetliner portrayed in Boeing's concept design would redline around Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound) at 6,500kph, making it almost three times faster than the legendary Concorde.

A passenger jet flying at hypersonic speeds could revolutionize air travel by cutting down a transatlantic flight from NY to London from seven hours to two.

While Boeing has been working on hypersonics research since the mid-'50s, the company will still face numerous hurdles before it can actually build this hypersonic jet. And judging by the looks of it, the new plane might become the most powerful and the fastest passenger aircraft ever created.

Even so, having several companies and countries racing to create supersonic airplanes can mean only one thing: eventually, humanity will get back to commercial supersonic flights.

Highlighted 15 years after the iconic Concorde made its final supersonic passenger flight, Boeing's concept aims to fly much faster with a theoretical trip from NY to Tokyo in just two hours. "For the business traveler or the military, where time is really important, that's an interesting point".

Boeing is serious about hypersonic and has been testing ultra-fast technology for decades, Jackson said.

'We're excited about the potential of hypersonic technology to connect the world faster than ever before. It will only be able to reach Mach 5 in the thin air of extremely high altitude around 95,000 feet, where passengers will be able to see the curvature of the earth. The aircraft would cross the Atlantic in about two hours, and the Pacific in about three.
