Bison gores woman in Yellowstone's 3rd recent animal attack

Superintendent Dan Wenk last week announced he meant to retire March 30, 2019, after being offered a transfer he didn't want to take.

The second visitor in three days was hurt in an accidental encounter with a cow elk Tuesday at Yellowstone National Park.

"I'm very disappointed, and yeah, I am angry about how this is being handled", Wenk said in an interview this afternoon.

"After 42 ½ years, I felt like it was a punitive action to have me leave Yellowstone National Park, especially when they have not told me why they want me to go to the National [Capital] Region", Wenk said. Brucellosis causes animals to prematurely abort their young and can be transmitted through birthing material.

"We feel that number is realistic and sustainable and not only meets the needs of the park in reducing migration of bison outside its boundaries but also reduces the threat of the possible transfer of disease to domestic cattle", said Jay Bodner, executive vice president of the Montana Stockgrowers Association.

Interior Department spokeswoman Heather Swift did not respond to a request from Reuters about any disagreements over bison management. There's never been a documented case of that happening in the wild, but it's a real fear in the ranching community and Iobst said those ranching interests have the ear of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke.

"We're not a livestock operation". "We do not believe the bison population level is too high or that any scientific studies would substantiate that".

Iobst suggested ranchers in Montana were anxious the grazing animals would bring disease with them, and alleged they were lobbying Zinke to stop the move.

Bison are sometimes an issue in the park. Wenk sought to curtail the killings with fledgling efforts to transfer surplus bison to American Indian tribes and expanding where the animals are tolerated in Montana.

A woman has been attacked by a bison in Yellowstone National Park in the United States. When he initially announced his retirement, he said he didn't view his proposed transfer to the Washington, D.C., area as political.

She said personnel moves for those who, like Wenk, are in the senior executive service "are conducted to better serve the taxpayer and the Department's operations".
