Atul Gawande Will Lead a Billionaire-Backed Health Care Company in Boston

Warren Buffett Jamie Dimon and Jeff Bezos are among the CEOs thinking of new ways to curb healthcare costs

The logo of Amazon is seen at the company logistics center in Lauwin-Planque, northern France, February 20, 2017. (AMZN) announced plans to team up for a partnership meant to reduce the rising cost of health care for employees.

"I have devoted my public health career to building scalable solutions for better health care delivery that are saving lives, reducing suffering, and eliminating wasteful spending both in the USA and across the world", Gawande said in a statement.

Gawande, 52, rose to prominence among healthcare policy experts with a 2009 New Yorker article, The Cost Conundrum, that examined why health care was vastly more expensive in some parts of the USA than others, despite little difference in the sickness or health of people getting it. He will take charge on July 9. Many other innovators have sought to find solutions to health care costs in the past but have run head-on into the complexity of the system.

The venture will be geared toward employees of the three companies, rather than healthcare consumers overall in the U.S., though Dimon said that potentially, all Americans could benefit. His company will be based in Boston. It will be an "independent entity that is free from profit-making incentives and constraints", the group said in the statement.

The healthcare venture JPMorgan, Amazon and Berkshire Hathaway announced back in January finally has a CEO.

In an investor meeting on June 1, Dimon pointed to fraud, administrative costs, and chronic care costs related to smoking and obesity. He also singled out end of life costs as being very expensive.

This is an area of expertise for Gawande.

Gawande wrote a 2009 book, "The Checklist Manifesto", that made the case that if hospitals were to increase their use of simple checklists before complex procedures, it would save numerous lives - in much the same way that pilot checklists have made commercial aviation safer. He is also well known for his books and writing in the New Yorker about the USA health-care system.

In both his writing and his speaking appearances, Gawande has been outspoken about topics such as wasteful healthcare spending, unnecessary care amping up costs and the slow pace of innovation in healthcare. Last month, he said the goal is to challenge the entire healthcare industry, not individual segments.
