As the scandals mount, conservatives turn on Scott Pruitt

EPA chief Scott Pruitt tapped aide donors to help wife land job at conservative group

At no point did he consult with EPA ethics officials about his monthslong efforts to get his wife a job, current and former agency officials said.

The administrator already faces a dozen federal inquiries into his spending and management decisions at the agency, including his first-class travels, a $50-a-night condo rental from a lobbyist, and the installation of a $43,000 soundproof phone booth in his office.

Those comments from Inhofe and Ernst arrived within hours of growing calls among conservative ranks for Pruitt to step down, including criticism from Laura Ingraham, a conservative radio host for Fox News whom President Trump follows on Twitter.

But whether a hearing will take place is ultimately up to the committee, Inhofe said.

An early backer of Pruitt's, Inhofe noted in his interview with Ingraham that EPA Deputy Administrator Andrew Wheeler, who was recently confirmed by the Senate, was fully qualified to carry out President Trump's agenda.

"All these things that are coming out are really not good things", Inhofe said in the interview. "And I would like very much to have a communication with him about what is and what isn't".

A conservative nonprofit group based in Iowa also launched a 30-second ad calling for Pruitt's resignation, describing him as a "swamp monster" who is "embarrassing President Trump", the Washington Post reported. Tom Carper of DE, the top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works Committee.

Several farmers were not satisfied with this explanation, and one suggested that if the formulas used by the DOE were hurting farmers, maybe those formulas should be revisited.

The conservative publication National Review on Wednesday published an editorial titled, "Scott Pruitt Should Go". "I've kind of taken the position that if that doesn't stop, I'm going to be forced to be in a position where I'm going to say, 'Well, Scott, you're not doing your job.' And hopefully that will change".

"Pruitt is replaceable", the piece read.

Under Administrator Pruitt's guidance, EPA has granted 1.6 billion gallons in waivers, with an estimated economic impact of $5.3 billion in lost markets for ethanol, corn and RINs. However, the spokesman did not disclose to the paper the time she worked there or what she was paid.

Ahead of the confirmation vote in April, Inhofe came to Wheeler's defense and vouched for both his character and anti-regulation bona fides.
