Arsenal transfer rumours: Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Aaron Ramsey, Marouane Fellaini

Robert Pires has high hopes for Arsenal bound midfielder

Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, reports the Daily Mirror.

But it has been Arsenal's head of recruitment Sven Mislintat who has been the driving force behind the club's push to sign Adli as negotiations began before Emery replaced Arsene Wenger as manager.

The Greek worldwide has just one year remaining on his contract and he's refused to sign an extension so Dortmund have made a decision to cash-in while they can still command a decent fee.

Sokratis has been a regular feature in the major European competitions in his time at Dortmund and he has a mountain of form in the worldwide sphere too, having made 79 appearances for Greece since making his debut back in 2008.

The 22-year-old Turkish worldwide Caglar Soyuncu, who plays his club football with Freiburg, is the latest name to be linked with a switch for a fee reported to be in the region of £35M.

In other news, Arsenal have also looked to reform their midfield this summer but Emery is hoping to commit a significant proportion of the budget to tie up Aaron Ramsey as he sees the Welshman as one of the pillars of his team.

The report claims that the Bundesliga side do not want the deal confirmed until the new financial year, which starts in the beginning of July.

Per Mertesacker has retired and we'll be without Laurent Koscielny for the first half of next season due to injury so we needed to bring in at least one new centre-back and it seems Sokratis is the man Emery has gone for.
